His GREAT EXCITEMENT IX A BOARDING HOUSE OX TWELFTH STREET—THE MAN AND WOMAX SHOT NOT SO SERIOUSLY INJURED AS AT FIRST sUP- POSED—A COMPLICATED STORY. Yesterday morning about 2 o'clock the still- ness that usually prevails in the neighborhood of 12th and F streets at that nour was broken by the noise of a half dozen pistol shots fired in rapid succession. Officer Oriani, who was walking toward the corner of 12th and G, ob- served that the sounds came from the house No. 604 12th street, which is kept as a boarding house by Mrs. Rogers, and at once started in that direction in time to arrest a very excited young Frenchman, who still held in his band the hot and smoking revolver. ‘The man proved to be George Le Cointe, with whom the officer had been talking but afew moments before as the former was mak- ing his way toward his rooms at the boarding house. A COMPLICATED sToRY. The story that reached ite climax in the shooting is a complicated one that came very near evolving itself into the death of a manand @ woman, for it was soon found that Le Cointe | had fired with fatal intent at his wife and at a man whom he claims to have it to be her paramour. This man is Cnas. C. Frost, a Young man of twenty-nine and the ageut here for a fire alarm company. There is one more person involved in lot, Miss Grace Eaton, & young ert student. The stories told by the four principals to the affair do not hang well together. THE MAN WHO DID THE SHOOTING. George Le Cointe, whose real name turns out to be Adolph Doyenhard, came to this country when a small child. After coming to this city to live his mother married 2 second time. a man named Le Cointe, and the young man was known by hisstepfather's name. Six years ago he married a young widow, Miss Edith Collins, who had two small children. She ix the daughter of Mr. Wm. 8. Yeatman, the disbursing clerk of the War Department. It turns out that Le Cointe was at one time in_the navy, serving in the same ship with Officer Oriani, but, it is claimed, he deserted before he had served his entire term of enlist- it. He is now a clerk in the War Depart- ment. WHAT LE COINTE cLArMs. Le Cointe claims that on Saturday he began to have serious doubts of his wife’s fidelity. He and Frost were friends, and Saturday morning | Frost aecompanied him to the train, as he was | going over to Baltimore for the day. | Late Saturday night Le Cointe returned to the city and reached his home about midnight. | He went to his room and found his wife there and also Miss Grace Eaton, but saw nothing to confirm his suspicions and was there only a few moments. He spoke to Grace and to bis wife | and then, puttiug a set of poker chips in his | pocket, went out with the explanation that he | might not get home till morning. Then be | wentinto the street and waited. THE SHOTS FIRED. It appears that Mra. Le Cointe, Miss Eaton and Frost had spent the evening in Miss Eaton's rooms drinking. The young art student occu- ied two rooms across the hall from the Le ointes’ apartments. Along toward 2 o'clock Le Cointe returned to his rooms and finding none there started for the rooms across the hall. where he expected to find his wife. The back room opens upon a tin roof of the Globe Hotel on F street. As Le Cointe drew his pistol and started for Grace's back room, seeming to ignore her resence entirely, hig wife tried to stop him. le fired and missed her. She turned and climbed oat through the window on to the tin roof and so escaped thi the Globe Hotel. Asshe fled the husband fired at her a second time and the ball struck her back just below the right shoulder blade, but she did not stop. THE MAN IN THE CASE. Finding a man in the rear room whom he claims to have felt sure was the author of his supposed wrongs Le Cointe pushed the man on the bed with his left hand, and as they struggled he fired four times. ‘Three of the bullets struck Frost, one in the stomach, one in the chest and one in the shoulder. At the time of the shooting, Le Cointe says, he did not know who the man was, The French: man was at once arrested and taken to the first police station on 12th treet, while the wounded than was removed to the cy Hospital near by. nalts, Le Cointe had already been taken to the | hospital and there the two wounded on cots side by side, while Dra, Hall ‘ent Boss and afterward Dr. Bowen dressed their wounds, The woman's wounds were by no means serious, but it was thought at first that Frost must die as the result of the wound in his stomach, but his condition was afterward found to be not so serious, and last night he was thought to be out of danger. He was taken from the hospital to his room at 008 12th street, which is @ part of Mrs. Kogers’ boarding house. ‘MRS. LE COINTE’S STORY. When Mrs. Le Cointe and Frost were carried to the Emergency Hospital he was almost un- conscious, but declared that he was not ina room with any woman. Mrs. Le Cointe was more talkative and said that Frost was not with her, but was ina neighboring room, and that she had left her own chamber and gone into the next room, where Miss Eaton’ was sick, to give ber some brandy when Mr. Le Cointe eame in. She thinks the shooting was the working out of's plan to murder her concocted by ber hus- band and the blonde art student, Grace Eaton. She thinks her husband was fond of Grace Notes between tiem. Her idea is that Le Cointe bud Grace secure Frost's presence in her room Naturday night and then simulate illness after she bad prepared to retire, in order to get her into fre room where Frost was, under circumstances that would be compromising. She says that her husband is insane when under the influence of drink, and that all his suspicions are Lascless. WHAT FRost says. In regard to the shooting Frost says that in fun Mise Eaton dared him to put on her night gown, which she got for him. Going into the back room he took of his clothes and put on her night gown. The door was partiall? shut and just as he had got the night gown on he heard Mrs. Le Cointe come into the outer rcom where Miss Eaton was. He sat down on the bed to wait for Mrs. Le Cointe to go out and it was then that the husband rushed in and began shooting. ‘MISS EATON'S VERSION. Miss Eaton, whose father, she says, was a wealthy Denver man before he died, came to this city with her mother several months ago. She liked it here, and decided tostay and study inting at Corcoran Art Sch Bother is 5 now in Boston, sepia Frost rs. Cointe spent Satu da; eveuiug in ber room. She had only a sickt acquaintance with the Le Cointes and scarcely any better one with Frost, she says, LE COINTE DN THE POLICE cover, ‘The prisoner, Le Cointe, showed plaialy the effects of his incarceration when he appeared in Judge Miller’s court this morning.
