THE PROCESSION, Hundreds of Veterans March in Line Ac companied by @ Military Escort, My ttany owt. "4 forms mingled with the blue and brass buttoned garb of the Grand Army in the crowd that collected about Grand Army’ head quarters opposite Willard’s Hotel this Morning. ‘This was the i \ starting point of the — —A\Y procession that left for —a Taj \, Arlington at 10 o'clock. Ashas been customary ix the past, the members of the various Grand Army posts ascmbled at their headquarters this morning and forming in line marched to Arlington to decorate the graves of their fallen comrades, ‘The fourteen post be- longing to the department of the Poto- mac had «fair contingent of their mem- bership in line As the entire ments for the proper observance of day is in charge of the Grand Army, many of the comrades were prevented by duties else where from joining the procession. The vet- erans in line, many of them with gray hair and haulting step, the result of wounds, wore the emblems of the patriotic order to which they belonged proudly, and as they fell in step and murched shoulder to +houlder with their com- rades the memories of the war time and of the years that have elapsed must havecome to them with mingled feelings of pleasure and sadness. Many of them no doubt recalled ‘those who had been with them on former Deo- oration days, but who were now slecping their last sleep, and as they looked upon the ranks now being thinned out by death they realized that the days of the veterans of the war were fast running out. MORE INTEREST THAN FORMERLY. Some of the older members of the Grand Army, however, regard with satisfaction the growing interest which is taken in the obsere= ance of the day and they feel that while the ac- tive participants in the war are fast disappear- ing, their fame and their deeds commemo- rated in this celebration will continue to be held in reverence by those who are coming up to take their places. ‘They suy that the ob- servance of the day is, if anything, more elab- orate than it used to be. Certainly the fine procession which formed on Penu hue near 15th street today and marched to the bridge at Georgetown was @ creditable display. lines of the throngs of people gathered on the sidewalks to witness the purade. ‘The third and fourth battalions District National Guard, the Old Guard and the National Kitles formed the military escort and then came the Grand Army and the John A. Camp, Sons of Veterans. The members of Alexanaer Hamil- ton Post, No. 164, mt of New ¥i were the ‘guests of the occasion. They come all the way from their homes to join their comrades here in the celebration. They intend to visit Mount Vernon today. OFFICER OF THE DAT SEVILLE. The formation of the procession was under the direction of W. P. Seville, who was finely mounted. He was the officer of the day. Mr. ii i Le x
