CITY AND DISTRICT. {F The local cirenlation of Tax Evexrxo Stan is not only the iargest and fullest, but it is also the nesr, since the paper goes not alone into the hands of the people of the District of Columbia «8 a body, but regularly into their homes,--into the families of all classes, and into those of the moncy-spending as well as the money-earning portion of the community. An advertisement in its columns therefore reaches the eye of everybody worth reachiny AT BENNING TRACK. Good Races Under the Auspices of the Wash- ington Cycle Club. There was quite a large crowd at the Benning | Tace track Saturd afternoon to witness the donbie attraction of races between bicycles and horses for supremacy in their respective | classes, under the auspices of the Columbia Cyele Club. The only drawback to the full en- foyment of the sports was a heavy shower, which softened the track somewhat and caused the time to be somewhat slower than ordi- narily. q The bicyeles first took the track and the’! events were run off in good order withoat mis- hap. President Harrison delivered the following address at the memorial day ceremonies at Laurel Hill cemetery near Philadelphia on Sat- urday: “Commander, comrades of the Grand Army of the Republic, and fellow citizens—I have neither the strength nor the voice adequate to any extended speech today. I come to you as @ comrade, to take part in the interesting exer- cises of this memorial day. It gives me special pleasure to combine with that tribute, which I have usually been able to pay since this day Was instituted, to the dead of all our armies, @ special mark of respect, and to that great soi- dier who won Gettysburg. It is impossible to separate some impressions of sorrow from these exercises, for they bring to memory comrades who have gone from us. How vividly there comes to my memory mauy battle scenes! Not the impetuous rush of conflict, but the hour of sadness that followed victory. "Then it was our sad duty to gather from the field the bodies of those who had given the last pledge of loyalty. ‘There ix open to my vision more than one yawning trench in which we laid our dead of the old brigade. We laid them elbow touch- ing elbow in the order in which they had stood in the line of battle. We left them in the hasty sepulcher and marched on. Now we rejoice that a grateful government has gath- ered together the scattered dust of all these comrades and placed them in beautiful and safe places of honor and repose. I cannot but feel that if they could speak to us today they would say, ‘Put the flag at the top of the mast.’ Ihave ‘recently returned from an ex- tended tour of the states and nothing so im- pressed and refreshed me as the universal dis- play of this banner of beauty and glory. It waved over every school house; it was in the hands of the school children. As we across the sandy wastes at some solitary house & man,a woman, a child would come to the door and wave it in loyal greeting. Two years Ry, Memors. Leonce Burthe, the principal and in fact the only witness against the jury bribers in the case growing out of the Mafia trials in New Orleans, was arrested in East St. Louis, Illa, on Friday afternoon and is now in jail in that city. When seen by a reporter Mr. Burthe at first refused to talk, but a leading question opened his mouth. He said: “When the Hennessy murder case was called I was drawn on the panel. Before I was examined and rejected F. Arment approached me and said that I would get $1,000 if I got on the jury and found the Italians not guilty. I told him I could do nothing of the kind. After the trial I told Mr. Parkinson, and afterward commanicated to him the fact that Edgar White, the deputy sheriff, had threatened to kill me if I tostitied his friend Arment. Yes; I was afraid and left New Orleans and got $1,000," but he seemed to realize that he was telling too much, and in the very next breath said he left New Orleans of his own free will and accord. District Attorney Lusenbarg of New Orleans recently issued nolle prosequi in the cases of Bernard Glands, Charles Granger, Emile Bag- netto, Thomas MeCrystal and D. C. O'Malley. ‘They were the parties who had been indicted by the grand jury for bribery and corruption of jurors in the Hennessy case. The indict- ments were regarded as not sufficiently specific. The district attorney then filed information against each of the above-named parties. Charles Granger is charged with having offered $500 to Alphonso La Berre. John Cooney and ‘Thomas P. MeCrystal are charged with having offered and promised to Frank Cormely to pay and) provide for all the expenses of his family during all the time that he might serve asa juror in the Hennessy case; Emile Bagnetto is charged with having offered $100 to David Bonhage, and Bernard Glandi with offering $300 to Henry Batwood. O'Malley is charged with having’ feloniously counsel and procured the said felony. The district at- torney asked the cases be immediately allotted. ————_-e- _____ Denied by Bishop Watterson.
