No Doubt That the Esmeralda is Seeking the Itata, HE CRUISER ARRIVES AT ACAPULCO, Prospects of an Engagement With the Charleston. LATE MEXICAN ADVICES. THE ESMERALDA AT ACAPULCO, Officers Come Ashore and Learn the Enten- tons of This Government. Sr. Loris, May 15.—A special from the City of Mexico says: A dispatch received late last night from Acapulcossys: “The Chilian cruiser Esmeralda entered this port yesterday and eailed again today. Several of her offiocrs were ashore and used the wires and made various in- miries regarding the action of the United Staten, showing” that they had’ were tes formed that the cruiser Charleston hed boon sent in pursuit of the Itata. It is be- lieved that she has steamed north to intercept the tata and protect her should the Charleston attempt to capture her. “The officers who came ashore were very reti- cent, but from one of the sailors it was learned that they expected to sight the Itata and act as her escort down the coast. The Exu « numerous crew and ppeara Yeterane and will fight. The op: ton provatle here that should the Charleston attempt to a ture the Itata a naval engagement will place and the United States gruiser will get the ‘worst of it.” TRE DISPATCH CONFIRWED. The above dispatch was confirmed at the War Department, but the officers were inclined to be reticent. A prominent official said that the craiser had been warned not to remain in port, as Mexico was not harboring insurgent Vensels and did not recognize any other gov- ernment in Chili than that of Balmnceda. That was the reason why the cruiser of the fishing boat which was nearly run down by « large steamer, which carried no lights, says that after bis boat was out of dangera bright, blind- ing light was suddenly flashed upon his craft and that it was undoubtedly produced by an electric light from a man-of-war. He said further that the vessel was steaming north. THE ESMERALDA GORS NowIu. With this fact in view there is butlittle doubt that it was the Esmeralda going north to inter- cept the Itata, It is the general idea that should the Esmeralda meet the Itata before she is overtaken by the Charleston the arms that sbe has and cargo will be transferred. In this case the Charleston could hardly delay the Esmeralda. No proofs would be forthcoming to prove what had become of the munitions of war. This will donbuless be the course which the Esmer- alda’s captain will pursue. The transter of arms being made on the aj ce of the Charleston, the empty Itata could be graciously handed over to it. @ A Ifa naval engagement takes place it cannot be delayed, if the Charleston is on the right track, much later than tomorrow, and will Seen ent ent the state of jalizco. A SYerERIOUs cnart. The following dispatch was received here at Spm: Say Bras Teric, May 14.—A long, low, rakish craft is lying on and off this port with steam and deter eo colors. Fisting, beste report her as being manned by a large crew and pro tected by formidable guns, ——— THE NEW JEKSEY AVENUE TREES, Col. Elliot Does Not Think They Have Been Seriously Damaged. The Commissioners today received a reply to the letter of the parking commission, which was referred to Col. Elliot, relative to injury done to the trees on the east side of New Jer- seyavenne between K and L streets by men laying the water main. Col. Elliot says in his letter that be referred the complaint to the foreman in charge of the work for report and, that he stated that nous of the roote of the trees were cut that could be avoided; that the trees were not destroyed, as charged, and that in his belief no serious dam- age was done to them. In conclusion Col Elliot says: “The main was laid on this short part of ite Toute and the trench was refilied before the complaint reached me, but I sincerely that time may prove the judgment of my fore- man to be correct, and I should very much re- gret the least injary to any tree plated by the ‘commission. ———— Second Edition Continued on Sixth Page.
