Great Political Activity Now Being Mant- fested in the Empire State, THE EX-PRESIDENT'S FRIENDS THOROUGELY AROUSED—HIS NOMINATION BELIEVED TO BE ALMOST A NECESSITY—HILL HAS CONTROL OF THE STATE, BUT HE HAS MANY ENEMIES. Information which comes here by corre- spondence and through politicians, who always keep a keen eye on the empire state, indicates that the friends of Mr. Cleveland are beginning to arouse themselves and to prepare to show their power. Mr. Hill's purposes are too well defined to leave ita matter of doubt that if they are going to control the state delegation in "92 they must fight for it. While Hill was getting control of the machinery of New York politics the Cleveland men saw 60 little to fear in his activity that there was not only no attempt made to prevent his getting the control he sought, but he was actually aided usa part of the party policy. When Cleveland was in the White House the use of a two-cent stamp upon the right sort of a letter could blocked Mr. Hill's schemes, and some of Cleveland men advised against Rhole party affairs of the state being put into his hands, but Mr. Cleveland refused to inter- fere to prevent it Now, as some of those thoroughly acquainted with the state politics explain the situation, Mr. Hill Las the official organization completely in his own hands, but the old guard, those who canvassed the state for Tilden and who have never gove through the state with « purpose in view that they have not accomplished ity are for Cleveland. THE OLD GUARD AROUSED. Tt is the “old guard” that is now being aroused. Mr. Hill, in trying for too much, in trying to force things to go his way too rapidly rmitting the and to exercise dictatorship too has made enemies of some who were formerly his friends and has greatly embarrassed himself. There are certain influences from the outeide being exerted to strengthen Hill's hands, not for the purpose of nominating him at the next demo- cratic national convention, but that he may be the better able to battle against Cleveland. Men who want Gorman to be nominated, giving encouragement can. But the thing which is generally spoken of now as Mr. Cleveland's may prove his strength before the convention, and will certainly arouse thoso who beheve in him to the necessary activity at this time and is lead- ing some who have not been strongly favorable to him to believe that it is gost that he should be upheld. The fact that he bad pos- session of a8 was conceded on all hands, before he wrote his silver letter to the Reform Club of New York would, it is thought, make his defeat, were he defeated in the next convention, attribuiable to that letter, and it would be a blow at the conservatism which he represents. CLEVELAND'S NOMINATION ALMOST A XECERSITY. A reelization of this situation, it is said, is leading to a fecling in the east, particularly in New York, that his nomination is almost a necessity. The first move to accomplish this is to make sure of the New York d ion, and a very shrewd game of politics is being played to this end. It is believed that Me. Hill's present position with relation to the ‘or- ganization is favorable to his overthrow as far 4s relates to his ambition to get inio the presi- dency is concerned. It is asserted with great Positiveness that Whitney, Brice, Don Dickin- son, Scott, Vilas and even are ail Working to bring about Cleveland's nominw- | ¢h: tion, and that they wili have Smith M. Weed's assistance also in the work for the New York delegation. Jt us sid that there is some, political signifi- cance in the change that has taken place in the editorial management of the World The re~ tirement of Mr. Cockerill deprives Mr. Hill of a warm supporter in that establishment, and Mr. Ford, who takes his place, is « strong Cleveland man, it is said. ——————__ THE PRESIDENT’S RETUEN, He is Expected at the White House About Six O'clock This Evening. ‘There are no preparations being made at the Whito‘House for the return of the President, which will be at 5:30 this afternoon. MR. BLAINE NOT SO WELL. YOUNG DUNCAN INSANE. He Says That His Wife Agreed to Be Killed. THE SHOCKING SENSATION IX WHICH A TOUNG WASHINOTONIAN FIGURED IN WALES—II8 MAR- RIAGE IN STOCKMOLM —EVIDENCES THAT KE Has BEEN INSANE SOME YEARS, Y-Goed, North Wales, for asmulting bis bride while walking on Mount Snowden on Tuesday, was married in February at Stockholm to the daughter of cigar manufacturer. The pair were discovered by an old man named Evans. Duncan had in his hands a beavy stone, while bis wife was lying on the ground, ber bead crushed and bleeding. DUNCAN'S DEFENSE. When Duncan was arrested he anid that if be had been left alone a minute or two longer be would have taken his own life, adding that it was a prearranged plan between bim and his wife. From the position of the parties when found this seems possible. Mra. Duncan must have lain still while ber husband was inflicting the injuries, as the stone or rock in his hands was so heavy that he could not possibly have wiclied it with one hand. When the unfortunate woman was being con- veyed to the farm house she tried to wave ber hands toward ber husband with a gesture of horror. No weapon was found on Duncan's pereon with which he could have committed suicide, nor is any motive known for the crime. DUNCAN CABLES POR FUNDS. Duncan has cabled to his brother Louis, in Washington, to send him £100 wherewith te defend himself from the charges against him. Mra. Duncan's cousin, who resides at Shef- field, ie now with her. The place where the bride lay was a kind of bed-like recess between two large rocks. ‘The heavy stone with which the prisoner battered his wiles skull is wedge-shaped, eighteen inches long, two inches thick and eight inches broad at the widest end. ‘There were marks on the rocks and on the stone that show that many of the blows struck must have mixsed their aim, while deep blood marks indicate that others were more successful. Duncan was brought into court this moyning, and after sub- mitting to the usual examination was com- mitted for @ week. ‘MR. DUNCAN'S CAREER. Richard Coolidge Duncan is the son of the Rev. Thomas Duncan, an Episcopal minis ter, who, at one time, had charge of Trinity Church in this city. From here he went to timore and afterward to Illyria, Obio, when his health became impaired and be was obliged to give up his parish and come to the eastern shore of Maryland, when be set- tled down at Earleville, Cecil county. From his earliest boyhood Richard had been delicate and on that account was petted by fond parents, and he developed into a way- ward, headstrong man with a changeable dis- position and no stability at all about bim. In company be was always retiring, modest and little sought after, but to those who knew him well be was a pleasant companion and eaceed- ingly bright and attractive, but, when aro his temper was of the most violent kind. At the Lehigh University, where he graduated, he stood first in every study, and while there he developed a remarkable talent for inventing mechanical devices, and the number of secret locks, springs, &c., of which his desk was always filled, was a source of wonder to bis fel- low students. Just before he went abroad and after he had graduated he was employed by an electrical company at @ salary of $2,000 per year. For the past three years he has spent most of bis time abroad, making short visits every now and then to the home of his aunt, Mrs ‘M.D. Bradley of 1688 Sist street, town. Dun- can was about five feet nine inches high, a de- cided wit , expressive eyes, and Note glasses. "He is ebout twenty-four years age. BVIDENCES OF INSANITY. Bis family wish to bave it known that for years they have been in constant anxiety owing to his mental condition. ‘Travel was reeom- mended by physicians, and it was in the that he would be entirely restored that trip which bas ended so usly was un- dertaken. Dr. Kempster, the expert upon insanity, was seen by a Stan reporter and said: ‘Three years T treated young Duncan professionally and then discovered evidences of an unbalanced mind, which might result sooner or later in some’ violent outbreak. I, at that time, wrote letter to his brother, who was at Johns Hopkins University, telling him plainly that this young man was in- sane and ought to be at once placed under re- straint, Itold him that there was every indi- cation that his erratic tendency would eulmi- nate in an outbreak that would result in injury to. some one, and so when I read in the paper this morning the account of his treatment of the woman said to be his wife I was not at all surprised. “He sbould have been put under restraint ree Years ago, but the family disliked the idea of placing him ‘in an asylum and hoped that travel would beneSt him.” It wase mistake, as the result has shown.” — SPEEDING TO WASHINGTON.
