The prime movers in the affair were George C. Gotham, Hallet Kilbourn and Joseph C. McKibben. ‘There were just officers enough to go around, so Mr. Gerham was made president, Mr. Kil- bourn secretary and Cul. McKibben treasurer. The mad rush for office has not yet reached the forty-niners, so the gentlemen mentioned have worn their official laurels without disturbance. All persons were eligible to membership who had resided in California prior to or in the year 1849, and admission was not denied to thove who had entered the auriferously inden territory before it was admitted to the Union. Subsequently the scheme was widened so as to admit sons of pioneers. ‘THE VETERANS CONGREGATE. Enthusiasm was the prevailing feature on the Macalester's wharf this morning as soon as the veterans began to congregate. The Commissioners decided to hear all parties tomorrow, but the Senator stated that it would beimposmble for him to be present. He did not Jaw was explicit and could not be made plainer. This, he said, was the law, reading froma mphlet: “‘No future subdivision of land in the Bistrict of Columbia, ‘without the. limits of the cities of Washington and shall be recorded in plan of the city of Washington.” Commissioners had to do was to follow the law. If they did not he was sure Co ‘opriate Py cent to extend the streets. ‘Commissioners had er to permit this vandaliam. The work Commissioners before the law was turning to the subdivision, which, if approved, will virtually close the extension of Connecticnt avenue, Senator Stewart said if it was approved ap additional cost of probably several hundred thousands of dollars would be added to this amount. He was positive that Connecticut avenue would be extended in a little while. Your Broop ° ed change of anecdotes that are not to be found in Bancroft's “History of California,” and a care- fuland unprejudiced listener might be pardoned for imagining that the age of miracles was at its height in California shortly after the dis- covery of gold therein. Reminiscences of the times when the narrators eluded the vigilantes were numerous and it was proudly stated that there resides in Washington a gentleman who not only got away from the amateur but ex- pert hangmen, but who took with him the rope ‘that had thoughtfully been provided for the oc- casion; his snecess in life has, it was stated, been remarkable. Not all of the one-time gold seckers who went to Marshall Hall today are wealthy, but that fact was not apparent to the stranger. The distinctions which divide richesand poverty were, temporarily at least, wiped out: every- body'was a “forty-niner” and everybody was going to Marshall Hail to renew his youth. SOME LADS GUESTS. Anumber of ladies went along, and that was the only thing that detracted from the '49 idea. President Gorham can tell of the day wher a mine= found an old hoo; in his trunk—e hoopskirt that was placed on exhibr- tion, that was regarded with reverence and for which the grea? malo multitude gave three respectful cheers. Luncheon, spread on tables beneath the awaited the pioneers at Marshall Hall.
