A Cuorcr Couuectiox or Ant. ‘The Veerhoff Galleries on F street have al- teady taken a place as one of the most con- spicuous and delightful attractions of the na- tional eapital aud are daily frequented by hun- dreds of resident lovers of art and critical vie- itors from the states. The artistic arrange- ment of the admirably selected works of art which fill the rooms to overflowing, the fine natural light, nicely modulated artificially when weak or over-brilliant, with that inde- finable something which throws its spell over every one insensibly in every precinet <a dedicated to the divine in art, render the gal- leries not only a fascinating and restful place for the visitor, but give so correct a view of the pictures that false impressions are out of question. In the short time that has elapsed since the opening of these galleries local and other col- lections have been enriched by the purchase from Mr. Veerhoff of many lovely works of art. Paintings by English, Geo. Howell Gay, three of the bold and striking works of Pascal, no less than nine by Parisian artists, important works in oil by Beauduin, E. Wood Perry, U. G. Sliepevich, J. H. Duiph, Granville W. Smith and McCloskey’s remarkable still life study of oranges, which has recently excited admiration in every visitor, have been sold at what to the artists must be very gratifying prices. Of etchings of the highest art value, by Jas. 8. King, Hamilton Hamilton and other eminent artist etehers, many have been sold. Within few days there have been added to the already unequaled exhibit of signed remarque artist proof and other etchings that most remark- able and impressive work of Jule Breton, “St. Jobn’s Eve,” etched by Charles Waltner; “The Gamoot Pisnet,” by Meiseonier, and the “Hunt- ing Morn,” by W. Dendy ‘Sadler, all shown ex- clusively at the Veerhotl Galleries, While attractive changes and additions are constantly made in the charming gallery de- voted to works in oil, anumber of the beauti- ful pieces of the initial exhibit, by such famous and promising American artists as Eaton, Bris- tol, Crane, Weyl, Uhl, Johnston, Linford, Sat- may still be’ seen for a few ‘Two large Venetian pictures on exhibition, which have recently occupied much of the space of the gallery devoted to water colors, have now been removed and will make way for 4 new and unusually attractive exhibit of water colors, to begin with Monday of next week. In the more mechanical and decorative fea- tures of art work the F street establishment of Mr. Verhoff is peculiarly rich. Several costly mirrors in the rococo style have just been pur- chased for some of the most elegant homes of the capital, and in the matter of picture frames of the most graceful patterns, gilded when or- dered by the most expert gilders, the facilities for production aretnexcelled. Held for the Grand Jury. ‘This morning in the Police Court, Judge Mil- ler, Prosecuting Attorney A. R. Mullowney called the judge's attention to the case of Charles Kubnert, alias Conners, against whom there was a charge of assaultand battery with intent to kill. The alleged assault was the shooting of a colored man named Monroe Banks in South hington one Sunday afternoon about a month ago. From the evidence it sp- peared that the prisoner and defendant met on 434 street and when the colored man walked against Kuhnert the latter called him a “— of a——” and shot him. An Addition to District Building Recom- inended. * Assessor Trimble wrote a letter to the Com- missioners this morning calling attention to the necessity of having everything in readiness for the new board of assemors by July 1. He recommends in view of the crowded condition of the District building that the inspector of buildings be directed to build an addi- tional room for their occupancy. As there is no money to pay for this addi- tion he recommends that it be paid for out of the emergency fund. He also calls attention to the fact that the law requires the annunl asseas- ment of new buildings to be made and com- pleted before July 1, and the same difficulty that has arisen in the past, namely, the lack of funds to pay for the services of a horse and buggy, which is absolutely required by the as- sistant assessor to do this work. ‘The question involving the use of the emer- gency fund for the extra room was submitted to the controller for his opinion as to the Com- missioners’ right to use the same. Dru Two nicely dressed young men, George Green and James McIlhany, were in the Police Court today on charges of violating the law. ‘The former was charged with disorderly con- duct and the latter with walking on the park. The first mentioned was considerably under the influence of liquor and the latter hada bottle with him in addition to what he had drank. Their only excuse was that they had been drinking, but the judge told them that drunken- ness was no excuse for violating the law. “When a man puts in his mouth that which destroys the brain,” said the judge, “he must expect to take the consequences.
