A Probably Fatal Row Among Disor- derly Colored Boys. Ona vacant lot near 2d and C streets south- west a large crowd of people—colored and white—assembled last night, attracted by a merry-go-round. There was the usual number of disorderly colored boys on hand and before the flying horses were stopped for the night several of them got into a quarrel, The affair did not end there, but the aitercation was con- tinued to the corner below, where one of the boys drew a pistol and fired into the crowd. The bullet entered the head of Charles Holmes and he fell to the ground apparently dead. Some of his frightened companions shouted “murder” and “police.” Among the first to re- spond to tho call were Policemen Espey and Herbert, They sent the wounded boy to Provi- dence Hospital. The officers received informa- tion that a boy mamed Arthur Dyson fired the shot, but they were unable to find him, They ar- rested one boy and locked him up to await the result of a further investigation, ARREST OF DYSON. This morning Dyson was arrested by the officers of the fourth precinct and locked up, charged with tho shooting. He will be held to await the result of Holmes’ injury. AN ENDOWMENT FUND. $16,000 Annually for the Law Depart- ment of Howard University, The bill introduced yesterday by Senator Evarts for the more liberal endowment of the law department of Howard University, men- tioned in yesterday's Stan, avers in its pro- amble that colored men are shut out of the law schovls of certain states and are compelled to come here for an opportunity to become skilled and learned in the theory and practice of law. It is also stated in the preamble that colored persons are admitted to Howard Uni- versity and that the funds of that institution are meager, The bill fixes the sum of 216,000 as the amount to be annually paid by the gov- ernment for the more completo ondownrent, support and maintenance of the law depart- ment of the university. A proviso states that no portion of tho said moncysshall be applied, under any pretense whatever, to the purchase, TUE TWO HUNDRED AND TWENTY YARDS RAC! The trial heats of the 220 yards run next took place. In the first were Elliott, Chichester, Elder and ‘Tyler, Elder winning in 28,2. In the second heat were King. Clark, Dickinson and Simpson. King won in 25.1, with Clark see- ond. Elliott was second in the first heat, ‘Uhe final, which was run after the running high jump, was contested by the first and second men of the trial beats, Elliott winning in 23.1, Elder second. RUNNING NIGH JUMP. The running high jump was the neatest bit of work of the day, Coville winning with great case, never touching the rod until he had left all of his competitors far behind, and the rod war at 5 feet 634 inches. His style of jump- ing is exceedingly graceful, being without any apparent exertion and every motion counting. His feat was rewarded by loud applause from the grand stand. 8. E. Lewis, who lasted longer than any of the other contestants, stopped at four feet and four inches, RACING ON BICYCLES. ‘There were five starters in the safety bicycle race—Barber. Oliver, Harry King, Meckrille and Stsylor. Barber was badly handicapped, the nearest man being 100 yards away, while he was the ouly racer at the scratch. Mack- rille and Oliver were at 100, Staylor at 120 and King at 150, Mackrille wo. Barber gave up after racing a couple of hundred yerds, seeing that the startof the others was teo greet to overcome. and be waited until they were coming down on the last of the four laps, when he braced up and gave Mackrille a pretty race to the tape. Muackeille’s time was 3.46.3. King was second, Oliver giving him a close pasb. In the second heat, which was run in about 2 quarter of an hour. the samo result was produced, and this ended the race in favor of Mackriile. In this heat Staylor dropped out soon after the start dnd the race was between Oliver and King for second place. It was a hot chase, and the home stretch was very exciting. Oliver lost by half a length, Mackrille made this mile in 3.52. THE OTHER RACES, Kenyon, Chichester aud Elder were the only starters in the 440 yards race, Chichester at the scratch, Kenyou with 15 yards end Elder 16. Chichester rau a veautiful race considering his eonditon and lost bya neck jn 67 soconda, Kenyou winning. 5. E. Lewis won the ranni against Green.
