He Did Not Know What He Was Doing When He Assaulted Mra. Daingerficid.” The friends of Mr. Reverdy J. Daingerficld, whose wife was assaulted by Mr. Edmand Blunt at Asbury Park, have made public a let ter received by Mr. Daingerfield from M Blunt, dated at Sheepshead Bay, September 13, and which they say warrants Mr. Dainger- fieid in not further prosecuting the matter. his jetter Mr. Blunt says “I know that I have always felt the most re- spectful estecm and regard for her and for your family and I am entirely unable to ae- count for my conduct, except that it was the Unreasoning actof adrunken madman. That Iwas very drank is certainly true, 4 do not remember anything of what occurred, nor cam I think of any cause for my conduct, | As I re- member it, thie is what happeved: Learning for the first time that evening that Mrs. Dain. gerfield was staying at Asbury Park, I deter- mined to call upon her, although | was then quite drunk. I did call, but was told she was out, but would shortly return. I went off. and, after taking several more drinks, I called agait 1 have only confused recoilection of the servants saying that Iwas too drank to see Mrs. Daingerfield and my insisting upon do ing 80. What clse happened between that time and my finding myself locked up in the station is as entirely a blank to me as though PI had never happened. God only knows whet I ig. God only knows what I would give to undo it, Ido not write this with any hope of ever being able to relieve myself of tho dis- grace and degradation i which 1 have placed myself. Jknow that nothing that I can ever do can lift me out of it; 1 donot write it with any idea of relieving myself of the responsibility for such conduct; only write for the purpose of saying thet 1f any way cam be devised, any plan suggested that will reheve youand yours of the pain and mortification that my outrageous conduct bas inflicted upon you, it will only be necessary for me to know it in order to comply with it whatever it may be. BISHOP KEANE’S RETURN. What He Did and Saw on His Trip te Kurope. Bishop Keane has just returned to his post at the Cathole University after au absence of two months in Europe. His journey was mainly meant for the resto- ration of his health after his recent accident, but he availed himself of the opportunity to visit some celebrated seats of learning abroad and to confer with eminent educators, Among other institutions he visited Trinity College and the Royal University in Dablin and the Universities of Cambridge and Louvain. He conferred with the principal professors in these | places, as also with Cardinal Manning, Arch- bishop Walsh of Dublin and other great pro- moters of learning in the oid world, He had also aa opportunity of meeting the three pro- essors of the university who are now prepar- ing for their future work on the universities of Germany, One of them i fitting himself for the chair of ecclesiastical listory, another for holy scripture and the third for the teaching of philosophy and expecially of psychology. While acquiring much information usetul for perfecting the orgunization of the faculty of divinity ins special aim was to prepare for the Organization of the future faculty of philoso- pey and science, In regard to this he says that he has gained much valuable information, and he expresses the hope that this facuity will be organized and opened for lay students within two years from ue present time, He returns to his work completely restored to good health. JUDGE MILLER WORRIED. Where Will He Hold Court ?—A Pere ambulating Court Possible. The ground in the rear of the Police Court has been measured for the third time, and Judge Miller has an idea that ground will be broken for the new structure for cells about the time that rough weather sets in and bricklayers can't work. What is also troubling the judge's mind at present is where he will hold court while the repairs to the Police Court building are being made, Those who are to have charge of the work say the court room can be used while the improvements are in progress, but Judge Miller thinks otherwise and will not hold court in the dismantled building, as he thinks the health of the court officers and himeclf is more to be considered than the trouble thet would be occasioned by moving into temporary quarters, An effort will be made to secure the use of one of the court rooms in the City Hall, but if that cannot be done it 1s not known where the court will meet for the trial of prisoners, Judge Miller has made up his wink, that he will aot hold court in the torn-up room, and if no suit- able place can be procured the court will go on wheels temporarily and the cases will be heard at the several police stations. Such an arrangement will prove troublesome, and the ysters” will not have #0 good an oppor- tunity as they now have to “cap” for business, —— Must Have a License to Give a Ball, In the Police Court today Wm. G. Betts was charged by Officer Lewis with giving a ball without a license at Odd Fellows’ Hall, 8th street cast. It appeared in evidence that there was no charge for admission, but the hat box charged 50 cents for caring for « hat and coat and that (on Tuesday night last) the receipts were $58. Mr. Betts claimed that those who attended did soas dancing scholars-—although one young man said he had Been dancing ten years—aud that from the hat box receipts hail rent, music, &c., was paid, and sometimes if a hat or coat was lost be bad to make it good, The officer stated that at their entertainment the order was good. The court instructed Mr, Betts that the giving of such an entertainment required a license au@ he, therefore, imposed 4 fine and suspended the sentence, advising him to take out a license the next time. ss Malf a Pair of Trousers, This morning in the Police Court when the name of John Thomas was called a colored man responded and sald “Not guilty” to the charge of vagrancy against him. Jobn had on an old coat and half a pair.of pants. The end of one leg of his trousers looked as though the rats had gnawed it. The absence of the 'miss- ing trouser leg was hardly noticeable because of the similarity in color of the exposed flesh and begrimed goods in the existing trousers’ leg. He was arrested in South Washington by Officer Espey. When calied upon to make statement he shook his head and disa| in the dock, Sixty days on the farm was his wentence, ee Not in Keeping With Surroundings, To the Editor of Tux Evewixe Sram: Atthe Saturday concerts on the President's masters—sit on an ugly, eb form that iooks as if it had been
