Chicago is hard to please, ‘The editorials in the Staats Zeitung against Culver are savage. In one leader Editor Hermann Roster declares that the pious Evanston man ought to be strung up. Among letters received by Culver is this: “I have no words to express the deep feelings of indignation I feel in my heart for you. Viliain, scoundrel, miscreant are mild terms. I pray to God that you may find your deserved place in the catch basin and I would love to put you there, head downward. The curses of aworldare upon you. There are thousands who would gladly hang you. a “One man to stand out against evidence, facts and eleven men. Shame, te, crank, fool, don’t never pray again to a God. You ought to be facie entirely thrice. ee Lae was a di and you caused it, ou be doomed. wpa ‘OICE OF A MILLION.” The Herald says editorially: “John Culver cannot bring matters into court too soon to suit the Herald. We shall see whether he is the saint that he assumes to be or the wretch the ople of this community believe him to be, ohh Culver is crazy or he is corrupt. He isa fool or he has been bought, He is incapable of forming a conclusion or he is a bribe taker. He merits the pity or tho condemnation of the people. He is an irresponsible creature, not governed by common human impulses, or he is a Pharisee, cloaking a rotten and vicious chm- acter behind a veneering of picty. His action in the jury room can be accounted for only on the theory that he is either an idiotor a villian.” ——_—__ see _- __ ALBERT VICTOR EXONERATED. Later Developments as to the Great London Scandal. London Special to New York World. Sir Charles Russell is going to try and get the trial of the West End scandals to the queen's bench, eo as to give Lord Euston the benefit of trial by special jury. The further postpone- ment of the trial at Euston’s request is not re- garded as a favorable showing for him, espe- cially when Newton, who was Lord Arthur Somerset’s solicitor and factotum, has beerf arrested for trying to induce boys, whose affi- davits were to be proof of the charges against aristocrats, to get out of the country. One of these witnesses named Hewitt has already gone and is believed to be in America, Lord Arthur Somerset was last heard from in Constanti- nople, where he had offered his services to the | sultan, He still repeats the silly story that he | fled in order to save persons in high places | from being implicates i in the scandal. As he was known to be a close companion of Albert Victor this cowardly explanation is believed here to be aimed directly at the prince. La- bouchere flatly asserts that there is not a shadow or a shade of suspicion that Albert Victor is implicated in the crimes, and as Labby got a personal letter from the Prince of Wales this week, as well asa visit from Sir Francis Knollys, the prince’s private secretary, pre- sumably he speaks with high authority. soe st Gen. Boulanger Has La Grippe. The influenza is tightening its grip on Paris and is sweeping through the departments, President Carnot is just beginning to recover, while Mrs, Carnot has been taken down by the complaint. A dispatch from St. Helier announces that Gen, Goulanger has been attacked and is con- fined to his bed. The Duke’s Visit to Canada. Already active preparations are being made in Ottawa for the reception of Prince Arthur, dake of Cannaught, in May next. The British government have requested Lient. Cochrane to make preparations to give hima grand reception in the Canadian northwest, and en- able him to seo the eountry and enjoy his trip, ‘The half breeds, however. Jerstood, will take advantage of the duke’s presence and lay their grievances before him that they may be laid befoge the queen. ———— Scalded Her Betrayer. Some time ago George Wooten betrayed Jennie Taylor of Huntington, W. Va., under promise of marriage and was arrested, but re- leased, - Saturday Miss Taylor sent for him and while they were conversing she put a large kettle of water on the stove to boil. When it came to the boiling point she suddenly seized the boiler and threw the hot water on Wooten's face and neck. His eyesight was destroyed and he was badly sealded about the body. Five Toledo Breweries Bought. H. M. Bigelow and W. D. Guthrie, of Boston, who have been in Toledo for several Gays negotiating, have obtained options on the five breweries of that city. They represent the English brewery buying syndicate. The syndi- eate do not aim at an entire purchase, but simply want control, and the options on stock cover but little over half of the total amount. Should the syndicate, after due examination by experts, conclude the transaction it will take w little over $1,500,000 to accomplish it. AYale Student’ 's Escapade. Richard Harvey Johnson of Boise City, Ida., a Yale freshman, has surprised the college community by eloping with Miss Kitty Ash- down, a nineteen-year-old plump and pretty girl of shady character. Johnson is twenty years of age, with wealthy parents and an in- clination to spend more time in amusement than with his books, Hemet Miss Ashdown while strolling near the college campus last ptember, He was immediately smitten, The pair took a train for Wallingford a few nights since, obtained the license by repre- senting that they were of age and were mar- ried by SP greats of the peace. Johnson has been called home by his parents : and his wife is living with | her folks in in New Haven, Five People 3 Murdered. At Niles, Ohio, Charies Shelar, his wife and | three children were found dead in their house | yesterday morning with their throats cut from | ear to ear. 5 r and his wife were found | lying together across the foot of the bed. The | three children were on the floor in different arts of the house. Shelar was a millman and had steady employment, but of late drank heavily, and it is rumored that he and his wife had not lived happily together. The theory advanced is that Shelar, ina fit of madness, cut the throats of his wife and children and then his own. The weapon used was a razor and was purchased by Shelar Saturday, Dom Pedro’s Allowance Cut Off.
