F. Trinnell, Air Point, Roa- Dat Philadelphia AT THE CAPITOL TO-DAY, ECONOMY IN THE HOUSE ——— A Lively Discussion on That Subject DISTRIOT APPROPRIATION BILL The Leedgm Asset Resolution Passed. Canaan! CENSUS TALK IN THE SENATE. ——— The Senate. The House joint resolution donating fixtures, furniture, &c. (heretofore belonging to the territorial governments), to the states of Wash- ington and Montana was presented and passed. Mr. Ingalls, from the committee for the Dis- trict of Columbia, reported back, with emend- ments, the Senate bill to establish a public park in the District, and 1t was placed on the calendar, Among the bills introduced and referred to committees were the following: By Mr. Plumb—To provide for the allotment of lands ia severaity to the Paw-Paw [udiane ta Indian territory. By Mr. Hoar—To establish a uniform system, of bankruptcy throughout the United States, By Mr. Gorman—To establish « court of pat ent appeals, TO AMEND THE CENSUS ACT. On motion of Mr, Hale the Senate bill to amend the census act by making the maximum pay of supervisors $1,000 instead of @500 was taken up, and a letter from Mr. Porter, the superintendent, was read to show the im adeguacy of the compensation now provided. Mr. Hale made a turther exj — of the bill, in the course of which ined that the'cleventh census would not be. allowed to drag along as the tenth census had done. SAYS THE TENTH CENSUS WAS “NOTORIOUSLY INACCURATE.” Mr, Ingalls remarked that the country would be glad to hear from the chairman of the census committee that the next census was not to be a repetition of the last. The tenth census had been provided for in 1880, and now, at the clote of 1589, all the volumes of that census were not published. He did not recollect the entire number of tomes that had been precipitated on the couutry in an avalanche of misinformation. The census had been no- toriously inaccurate. It was notreliable, It was cumbered with an enormous mass of mat ter that never should have been included. After a protracted discussion, partic’ Ppa in by Senators Dawes, Reagan, telier, ¢ a Dolph, Stewart, Blair, Paddock and Wilson Iowa. (most of it on the subject of statistics of farm mortgages and Mr. Bluir's remarks being directed to the question of statistics of the liquor business), the bill went over wi action, Mr. Hale giving notice that be would call it up immediately after the holiday recess, Nominations Today. The President sent to the Senate today the following nominations: Milton Weidler of Oregon, collector internal revenue for the district of Oregon, Sergt. Lunsford, second artillery, to be seo ond lieutenant, sixth cavalry. Thos. W. Lord, firet lieutenant, retired list, to be captain on the retired list; also a number of recess appointments, mainly postmasters, House of Representatives. The House was treated to « spicy little dis cussion this morning between Mr. Holman (Ind, ) and Mr, Mills (Tex.) The discussion was precipitated by a statement from Mr. Carlisle (Ky.) to the effect that in offering the resolu- tion yesterday for the appointment for L BR. Hill as assistant door keeper he has fixed the salary at $2,000, believing that that was the salary which had always been received by the other special employe, Mr. Clancy. Ph has been the republican minority employe.) He had learned that this was a mis and that Mr, Clancy's salary had been 71,500, He therefore moved to reconsider the vote BoA which the resolution was adopted in order that the House might determine whetber it would reduce Mr. Hill's salary to €1,500 or increase Mr. Clancy's salary to $2,000. The vote ha been recousidered. Mr. Holinan (Ind.) to reduce Mr. Hill's salary to €1,500, and he urged the necessity of —— economy i= the expenditure of public money. ‘ME. HOLMAN WINS.
