Woodward, who for 15 years has been in the service of the treasary department of this city, holding age the las* few years the position of cashier, is alleged to be a defaulter to the amount of $52,000, From the disclosures made it appears that Wood- ward's first dereliction was on June 13, i876, less than a year after his appointment as cashier, when he drew a check on the a fund for $13,000, but this he restored a week later. His next venture was on January 5, 1877, when he drew a check for $25,000, having ered his tracks successtully by means of trans- fers from one account to another. At various times thereafter he covered deficiencies of $15,000, $22,000 and $20,000 until the total reached $52,000, beside some deficiencies amounting to a few bundred dollars in his petty accounts. The sinking funds do not lose a dollar. Itis evident that the cash of the city account was taken by Wi oodward and the hole made _ cov- ered up by these checks on the sinking fund. ‘The stuking fund commissioners and the cam- mittee on the treasury will hold meetings this morning and a searching Investigation will be had. Woodward, who has disappeared, was about 30 years old and resided at Jamatca Plain.
