THE SEDUCER CP MARTHA YICKBT KILIS HER FATHER. A special to the Baltimore American from New Windsor, Md., October 16, says: Miiton Picket, a man 53 years of age, living in Freedom district, in the lower part 6f' Carrol county. on the road leading from the oid Sam’s Creek road to Brandenburg’s mit, was shot on Tuesday morning last by Luther Picket, of the same neighborhood, and died on Thursday night at 9 o'cicck. The verdict of the jury was as follows: “Milton Picket came to his death on theevening of October 14th from a ball fired from a revolver held in the hands of Luther Picket on the morn- ing of October 12th.” The follot facts in Tegard to the tragedy disclose its origin and character: About four years ago Milton Picket, with his family—consisting of his wife, Martha E., bis daughter, about 17 years of age, and a young son—moved to his present place of abode, A short time after this Luther Pieket, who is a second Cousin to the girl Martha, moved into the pe espe and, with the ald of his brother, nas of a farm belonging to his widowed mm mother. die soon commenced paying attention to his cousin Martha, which continued for sev- eral years. Eventually an engagement of mar- rlage was made between them. This was the beginning of the trouble, Under the promise of marriage he accomplished his cousin's rain. Her condition became known, and she, with her par- ents, Wa8 anxious for the marriage to take place, Sut young Picket, offering pretext after pre- ext as a ground Of delay, succeeded ia pos'pon- tng the marriage. About two weexs before her ‘confinement he called to see her, and again re- newed his promise to marry her at once, He hen left her, and Martha never saw him again until the day of the shooting. The child wa; born on the 12th day of April last, just six months bifore the tragedy. During that interval the father and daughter repeatedly sent wo-d to young Picket to return and fulfill his promise to which he paid no attention. At last the girl, frenzied with her grief, determined to fore matters to a crisis. Accordingly, last Tuesday morping, accompanied by her father, she went to a field about two miles distant from her home, where Luther was so’ wheat, and met him close to the fence. ‘The girl had a rather large ized, five-barreled Smith & Wesson revolver. and her father had in his pocket an old revol- ver, which had been loaded, but not disc! ed, tor nearly ayear. As they met the father said: ‘Luther, we have come down to see if you will go with us tothe house. Will you go?” His reply was, “No, I won't; ’ and at once the shooting commenced. After Martha's re- volver had been emptled of Its contents, firedin all directions, she turned to her father,” who had not taken his pcan from his pocket, but who was beating a hasty retreat. During this time Luther Picket was Sani at the retreating man, and as he was scaling the fence the fatal bullet struck him in the back, about three Inches to be right of the spinal minty a little below tae crest Of the illium, passing through the cavity of the abdomen, breaking down the under sur- face of the rghit lobe of the liver and lodging neer the suri about two and a haif inches above the umbilicus The unfortunate man, after receiving the shot, walked some distance to a neighbor's yard and there fell. He was then conveyed to his home andi medical atd hastily Summoned. Dr, L. A, Aldridge probed tor the ball and found it located as Above stated, and atonce removed it. The doctor readered all the ald in his power, but his skill was of no avail. When the doctor told him he could not live, he said, “Well, Luther shot me. I went with my girl to protect her, but_ was sii Ue said futher “thet he never fired at all, aud that Luther had fired the first shot.” This, how- ever, Is denied by the boy who followed the drill, who said the girl Martha fired the first shot. Young Picket and his brother, who witness ?d the shooting, were not present at the prelimiuary ex- aminaticn, as they had gone to Baltimore iu the nee hot knowing that the old man bad died. The general impression among those as Seabed seemed to be that he (yoting Picxet) would not return, but this 1s mere conjecture. ‘Tbe mother of the girl remarked: “If tae men will not protect the women, they must protect themseives.” A SUMMARY OF ForsiGN Eyants.—The Turk- ish commissioners to arrange with the Monte- negrins for the cesston of Dulcigno have arrived on the disputed territory, and it 1s proposed that the surrender be executed under the supervision of the diplomatic agenis accredited to Monte- negro....A rumor is current in Europe that the Austrian Crown Prince has suggested that Rus- sia and Austria unite in a scheme of territorial spoliation, and that Russia should seize Con- staptinople....The Athens dene he threat- eps to proceed to extreme measures if the pow- oe do not soon decide the Greek ce pigs oy ely attended Irish land meetin; nee we been at Longford and Bradford, and Parnell has insisted on keeping up the agitation through- out the winter... ne another Irish landlord has been fired upon.
