It looks now as if the triangular contest In Virginia will be fought through to the end, ‘The prospect of a union of the democratic tac- ons has grown less with each day of late, and the present indications are that a movement to that end !s no longer contemplated. The chatr- man of the regular, or funder, democratic State committee has fssued an address, stating that “the May (funder) ticket has come to stay and to win.” The readjuster leaders and Organs are no less determined, judging from their utterances, to hold the fort, and conse- quently the result in the state depends entirely upon the strength that each democratic faction commands. If these factions divide the demo cratic vote anywhere nearly equal then tne election of the Garfeld ticket Is within the bounds of probability. The funders esti- mate the total democratic vote at about 150,000, and allow the readjusters 4,000; they estimate that the republicans will not cast exceeding 90,000 votes, and therefore that their (tunders’) ticket will be elected by a plurality of 20,000. The readjusters substantially reverse this cal- culation In their behalf, and count upon a Plurality of from 15,000 to 20,000. One effect of the capitation tax law will be to disfranchise thousands of colored voters, according to dem- ocratic calculations, but as there is ample time for the payment of this tax yet, it Is dificult to tell how it will operate upon the two, or rather three parties. The law ts very stringent in pro- Viding against the payment of the tax by others than the voters themselves, the object being to prevent politicians and political organ- izations from supplying voters with tax receipts In return for their votes, as is done in Penn- sylvapia and Massachusetts. These pro- visions of the law may be used go as to prevent any wholesale payment of the tax by the republican national committee. The last state election affords no Sort of basis for an estimate of the vote that may be cast on the 2dof next month, because thousands remained away trom the polls. The contest was between funders and readjusters, and tens of thousands of white democrats did not vote. Whether this large number of voters will swell the ranks of funders or readjusters next month, there is no means of Knowing. Not jess than two-thirds of the democratic papers of the state support the regular ticket, but the re- adjusters have a live organ in Richmond and are supported by. perhaps, a score of weekly Journals throughout the commonwealth. The readjusters have cengressional candidates In all the districts except the fourth. The repubil- cans nave candidates in every district where they have any chance to win, and unless their Voters are captured to a considerable extent by the readjusters, they (the republicans) have a fair prospect of gaining one or two Congressmen. ‘The estimate of the republican state commit- tee is that there are In Virginia 154,000 white registered voters, and 112,000 colored; tnat ‘20,000 of the whites and nearly all the colored men are republicans; making the total repub- Ucan vote 132,000; that 30,000 will be disfran- ebised by non-payment of the capitation tax, leaving a net vote at the polls of 102.000; that 10,000 white democrais will not pay the tax, and deducting the 20,000 white republicans, this leaves a White democratic vote of 154,000, which will be about equally divided between funders and re-adjusters. Then, deducting 77,000 from 102,000, the committee figure a plurality of 25,000 for the republicans in the state. ‘The readjusters certainly have some republican support, tn spite of the appeals of Chairman Jewell to his party in Virginia. This suppor ecmes irom aciass of republicans who do no: believe their party can win, apd thelr policy 1s to aldim defeating the “bourbon” wing of the democracy. There is doubt and confusion al around the political board in Virginia. Thesit- uation is a muddle, and the wisest political Prophet im the state would not bet a dollar either way on the outcome. The question of democratic unity in New York city will, so it ts stated, be decided to-day. At the conference between Tammany and Irving balls Saturday afternoon it was agreed to conclude the negotiations to-day, and the in- dications potnt to the nomination of a joint ticket. The pressure of the whole party hag Deen brought to bear upon the two New Yorks factions with special weight since the Ohto and Indiana elections, and the leaders of the city democracy have now no alternative but to unite or virtually leave the party. Tammany ts rul- ing and directing party affairs in New York, ald {ts adherents are now warmly in favor of a union ticket, because the bulk of the benefit will accrue to them. It 13 the Tilden element that is lukewarm now. They see their old ene- my, Tammany, restored to the exalted postlion in the party that it formerly held; they see that the Gemocracy of the country are looking upon Tammany as the real element of strength in the city; Unat demoeratic leaders consult with Tammany, and that ia the event of democratic success Tammany will be given the credit as far as New York 13 concerned. This naturally has @ depressing effect upon the old Tilden faction. Tammany is working with {ts old-time vim and energy in behalf of Hancock, while Irving hal! Seems to be doing but little. Unless the anti- Tammany democrats get such representation upon the local ticket as will assure them a Proper share of the fruits of victory they may, When it comes to vot leave Tammany to elect the ticket. At all events, and regardless of the result of the presidential election, Tam- maby has wou by skillful management what 1t most wanted. The local ticket put forth by the Gemocrats Is certain to be elected, even though anti-Tammany may not cordially support it. Should Irving hall ly the track it will leave Tammany with ail the party machinery in its hands. ——-<+e —___ It appears from the South Carolina papers that there 1s a more spirited canvass belng car- ried on tn that state than ts generally sup- posed. The republicans are contending only for the electoral vote and for congressmen, having at thelr convention decided not to oppose the democratic state ticket. The greenbackers have a state ticket in the fleld.fand are making a reg- ular cany: There are several independent candidates for congress, and in different coun- ties Independents are runting for local and legislative cfiices. The men who are conspicu- ous in the greenback party and in the inde- pent movement were, many of them, at least, formerly democra:s, The regular democrats are making a thorough canvass of the state, and are paying special attention to the colored vote. ‘They claim to have won over colored men in every precinct, and that these votes will offset the loss of the “ soreleads,” who have gone off With the greenbackers and independents. The Joss of South Carolina to the democracy has not yet been considered among the probabilities, but if the national republican committee now takes a hand tn the fight, it may render the re sult doubtful in two or the congressional dis ‘tricts, but the democrats will, in all probability, carry Uhelr clectoral ticket through, anyhow. __ The repudiation movement in Tennessee, (hough not yet successful, has had a most de ‘Pressing effect upon the value of real estate ‘This effect ts lilustrated by a sale of land at Clarksville, in that state, the other day. The Jand Is situated within half @ mile of the town, along the river, and ts very fertile. Four years ago it was worth $0 per acre, and the otmer day, after baving been well advertised, if was sold for $13 per acre. This land lies in a section of country that has often been called the “gar- Gen spot” of the south, because of the fertility Of the soll. After the war the tand in that sec- ton held its own in value, but talk of repudia- thm bas made it next to worthless, and pros- frated every other interest of the state, -THE EVENING STAR. | H{4"9uemcoer roars, BL COLORED SI J M. & B.
