President Grant thanked them for the call, 1 said, in response to a remark made con- gratulating him upon his recent victory, that the vote he had received was more gratifying to him then the possession of the office, itself, as it served to show that the American people did not believe the campaign slanders against him. In the course ot the Interview Messrs. A. R. Shepherd and Jobn F. Cook were presented to him as the delegates to the Philadelphia con- vention from this District, who had the honor of voting for him. Lincotn Hatt—Theodore Thomas Orchestral Concerts,—The;cntire auditorium of this hall was filled Jast_ evening, it being the occasion of the Thomas concerts. As an evidence of the rapid cultivation of our citizens in the apprecia- tion of classica] music, the fact is noticeavie that with each year the attendance at these concerts is larger and the programmes pre- sented savor more of the rigid and classica! schools, Last evening, for example, we were trated to. Cherubini, Beethoyen, Mozart, Wagner, Mendelssoh ehetiann, and Liszt. Beethoven and Wagner being received with marked orgetation. Ithas well said of Theodore Thomas that he ts the “pioneer of musical art in America.” We are now, through bis excellent orchestra, introduced to the best works of the greatest composers, and are favored with programmes which Europe with its hosts of artists and their limitless repertoire can not excel, The “Scene by the Brook” from Bee- thoven’e hastors| symphony was the gem of the even nz, if any particular selection may be noticed as such. All were tape ihroe with that delicacy of intonation and distinct shadiug which marks each performer at once an artist. Mr. Osgood, the new tenor, stings understand ingly, though his selections, we take it, we not Tully appreciated. Whe Mozart aria was given with great feeling, and ably sung. The short melodies of Schumaun, however, full ot seniiment and beauty as they are, are more pleasing in the parlor, or what is known as the mber concert or recital, taanin a hail the coustic properties of which are inferior. Mr. Jacobson, the new violinist, has a method new to us, and differs from Herr Listeman in grac and expression. His touch is peculiar, ¢ and precise, yet at times seeming!y off the ke The extraordinary 6 arrangements for round, however, may bave given rise to the lat- ter expression. Mobun & C Twenty-eight years sgo the now famous char. acter of Major Joseph Jones, of the Georgia Bilitia, was presented to an admiring world b) that modest but genuine humorous writer, Wil- liam T. Thompson, then the publisher of 2 Georgia country newspaper, and now the busy editor of the Savannah Daily News. The author ander-estimating the value of bis production, disposed of the copyright for a trifling con- sideration to a Philadelphia publishing house, from which the publishers for al! theso years have realized a large iucome. “Ma- jor Jones's Courtship” has had vitality enough to outlive the long line of so-called humorous publications, and now promises, with the new eketch matter added, to have a permanent ex istence, and at the same time to bring some return to the author, who under the new copy- right law gets a renewal for fourteen years for his own benetit.
