PRESIDENT GRANT TAKS A STAND FOR CiviL Skuvick KerorM—A delegation of prominent politicians from Pennsylvania called upon President Grant this mom- ing for the purpose of securing the ap- pointment of George Truman postmaster of Philadelphia. Among the prominent mem- bers of the party were General Cameron, Gov. Hartranft, Mayor Stokeley, District Avermy W. B. Mann, Sheriff Leeds, U. S. Marshal Kerns, Hon. Charles O'Neill, besides several members elect of the Pennsylvania sag peets, The delegation was received by the President about eleven o’clock, and the membersof it were introduced by Secretary Robeson. Mayor Stokeley, who acted as spokesman of the party, urged’ upon the President the i portance of the appointment of Mr. Traman, who he said was pix lican and a warm friend of the administration. The republican party, the mayor added, had gained a great vic- tory in Pennsylvania, but it was to ng ad the organization, and the appointment ot Mr. Truman would contribute ly to that end. Reference has heretofore been made la ‘Tue STR tothe project of Mr. Albert Bris- bane, and a brief description of the tube in- vented by Lim was given. Congress, it will be remembered, at the last session appropriated $15,000 to construct a tube of his patent between the Capitol and Government Printing Office, and as the work of laying it wil’ soon be com menced, there will no doubt be much interest felt in its completion and practical worki Pneumatic tubes are now successfully working short distances in New York, London, Pari. and Berlin, but they constructed on a dif- ferent plan from that oi Mr. Brisbane, the vehicle in those tubes being ran on wheels, while in that of Mr. B. it is not, and conse- juemtly much loss by friction is avoided. Mr. risbane claims that he can transmit kages through a tube from New York to San Franciseo y hol spheres in the tube and cympencr 3 the alr from the other end from that in whic! the sphere is started, thus creating a vacuum, causing the atmospheric pressure of 15 pounds to the square inch to drive the sphere through rapidly. ‘THE INVENTOR is an elderly gentleman over sixty years of age, tall but very thin, with grey hair and side whix kers, and a thoughiful cast of countenance. He has given years of study to his plans, and talks with much earnestness about his project and the glorious results he expects to achieve. «Why, sir,” ne said to our reporter, “ I wil! bring wheat from Sau Francisco to New York inatew hours. Iwill make a complete revo- lution in the commercial world.” Keporter —What size tube wonld you require transport packages from San Francis Mr. B.—Twelve feet diameter will a every purpose. t But your tube will cost more than # wer No, sir, not as much. Why, sir, have started at arest and thrown the sphere up an angle of forty-five degrees, simply by exliausting the alr. In Buffalo they have an ordinary tube of six inches diameter, one end of which they insert in vessel loaded with wheat and exhaust the air from the other end in the top of th iding ninety feet above the vessel, and away gocs the wheat. Kuns right up the tube, DON’T YOU SEB? Why, sir, all transportation is to be revolu- tionized by this pneumatic tube. HOw IT Is MADE, ‘The tude is made of pine staves of three or tour inches width, one inch thick, pat together in circular form, and securely fastened with heavy iren hoops placed at intervals of four or five feet. Several coatings of thiek paper are then wrapped around it to make it per- teetly air-tight, and the tube is placed in the trench securely packed in clay.
