In Missou there is a Republican gain of one Congressman* and in the States of Illinois, Minnesota, Michi- gan, Wisconsin and Nevada, according to the returns received the position of aifairs seems to be unchanged since I*#4, all tending to the conclusion that on Tuesday Iast there were elected about sixty-nine or seventy Republi- cans in the House of Representatives totwenty or twenty-one Democrats. With the members already elected, and those yet to be chosen in Connecticut, California, Kentucky, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Tennessee, it Seems to be established that in the next House the Republicans will have more than two-thirds of the members, while in the Senate there will be an increase of Republicanstrength. A Conservative will come in place of Senator Creswell, of Maryland, but there will be an offset to that in the election of a Republican in New Jercey. Illinois will elect a Republican Senator, Kansas wil! choose two, and Missouri, New York, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wis- consi will each elect one. The next Senate will, therefore, stand about forty-four Re- peblicans to eight Democrats—more than a three-fourths majority for the former party. The Republican majorities in the States which voted on Tuesday are estimated at about 232,- 00, making, with the result of the October elections, at least 432.000 majority in the North- ern State: javor of the dominant party. New Books. Poems ann BaLLaps. By Algernon Chartes Swimburne. New York: Carleton. For sale in this city by Philp & Solomon. This is the book of sensuous poems that is just now re- celving the execrations of the English critics. It seems to be written, like Charles Reade’s “Griffith Gaunt” and Walt Whitman's “Leaves ef Grass,” in a spirit of protest to what Reade terms the “prurient prudisbuess” of the age. itis hardly fair, however, to Reade or Whit- map to class their productions on the score of sensuality with the “Poems aud Ballads.” Swinburne out-Eyrons Byron in idealized | A variety of Useful and Oru smental Articl erossness. According to Swmburne. whatever ss natural is right, and being right, it is right to describe it. He bas not the instinct of shame that teaches even the lowest savage. to cover bis naxedness. The Swinbuarnman grossness is disguised in vigorous. felicitous language, which will probably save it from the fate of the obscene books pounced upon by the police: but it is not one whit less mischievous on that account. Under a shelt they found a large number of empty cigar boxes, and near the south end of the room a quantity of kindling wood. The boxes were arranged in rows, and between them was cotton saturated with campbene or coal oil. Uuder the lock of the door they found @ quantity of half barned matches. Around the lock on both sides there was evidence that cot- ton had been stuck to the door.
