Mr. Forney’s well known ability, and the fact that the subject of “Union Leagues” , ig at present on interesting subject, and will bo Gonbt insure a tull house. > STARVATION SALARIES POR. OUB PrBLic Benoor TeacnErs.—Uwing to the absence of Alderman Sargent, Chairman of the Schools j Committee in that board, on Monday night no action was taken on the bill trom the lower Board, raising the salaries of the teachers ot the | public echcols. We presume the matter will coma up to- night in that Board, and from the assur- ances we receive from the most intellizent and | influential members of that Board have no j doubt that the Aldermen willconcur with the lower Beard in adopting some fair means ot | relief for a most laborious and deserving «l-ss | ofemployees. Most ofthe arguments against such increase are of so flimsy a charactor as | really uot to be worth the ink spent in ans wer- ing them. A word, however, in regard to the contract | «‘shoddy” system by which it has been pro- posed to furnish cheap teachers, (willing to Hl work for nothing and beard themselves,) in | place of the presenteones, in case the latter are dissatisfied with the present pay. In conversation lately with a gentleman from Massachusetts, well conversant with the ad- mirable public school system there, we men- | tioned the fact that it had been gravely pro- posed in our City Conncils to import low- riced teachers from the North, warranted to | @ better than those they should supercede. «* Why, sir,” said he, if a member of our City | Counci!s should. rise in his seat and attempt to } belittle our teachers and our public schoo! sys- | | i tem, he would be hooted out of the chamber, Vy and his reception at home from his cons‘ituents would be one he wou:d not forget in a hurry.” This gentleman went on to say that so | great is the desire to keep their noble public school system up to the highest standard, that they secnre and retain the best talent for tea ing by paying celuries (with a yearly advance upioa certain maximum) that will make it worth while for them, the male trac deest, to follow it as nsife business. it of the ridiculous, he said, tosuppose th ers beld in such estimation at home would likely to leave their dosirable situations and salaries to take positions in acommunity whe; teacherships are held co low that it is actually proposed to peddle them ont to the lowest tid- ers! In this connection he referred us to the + An- nual Report of the School Committee of the City of Boston, 1:62, 7 the instrnetors in th blic schools of thatcity for the year iS63 is esta! ished os follows :- se The saiary of the musters of the Latin, the English Hieh, and the Girl's High ard Nor:nal schools is $2,100 for the first year’s ser vice, an increase of S100 tor esch additional year’s wervice, till the salary amoants to $2,450) per annum. . « The salary of the sub-masters of the Latin and Erglish High Schools, and of the masters of the Grammar Schools (corresponding to the Frincipals of our grammar schools—#.l. Star) as $1.600for the first year, with an annual increase | of #10", fall if amounts to $2,000.” ‘We may add that the pay of female teachers | is not comparatively as high in Boston as for male teachers, as it is held there that the salary of the male teacher shou!d be sufticiant to en- able him to provide for 4 family, and it being | designed that the oceupation should be a per- manent one for him. We may add that it is now in contemplation toraise the salaries of all the texchers in the Boston schools; and then we think nothing more need be said as to the likelihocd of competent teachers from abroad scrambling for positions on starvation salaries in the public schools of Washington. i a INTERESTING MissionaRny Meetixcs.—A series of Missionary meetings commenced in Wealey Chapel, corner of Fifth and F streets, yesterday morning, and continued throughont the day.
