OUB PrBLic Benoor TeacnErs.—Uwing to the absence of Alderman Sargent, Chairman of the Schools j Committee in that board, on Monday night no action was taken on the bill trom the lower Board, raising the salaries of the teachers ot the | public echcols. We presume the matter will coma up to- night in that Board, and from the assur- ances we receive from the most intellizent and | influential members of that Board have no j doubt that the Aldermen willconcur with the lower Beard in adopting some fair means ot | relief for a most laborious and deserving «l-ss | ofemployees. Most ofthe arguments against such increase are of so flimsy a charactor as | really uot to be worth the ink spent in ans wer- ing them. A word, however, in regard to the contract | «‘shoddy” system by which it has been pro- posed to furnish cheap teachers, (willing to Hl work for nothing and beard themselves,) in | place of the presenteones, in case the latter are dissatisfied with the present pay. Star) as $1.600for the first year, with an annual increase | of #10", fall if amounts to $2,000.” ‘We may add that the pay of female teachers | is not comparatively as high in Boston as for male teachers, as it is held there that the salary of the male teacher shou!d be sufticiant to en- able him to provide for 4 family, and it being | designed that the oceupation should be a per- manent one for him. We may add that it is now in contemplation toraise the salaries of all the texchers in the Boston schools; and then we think nothing more need be said as to the likelihocd of competent teachers from abroad scrambling for positions on starvation salaries in the public schools of Washington. i a INTERESTING MissionaRny Meetixcs.—A series of Missionary meetings commenced in Wealey Chapel, corner of Fifth and F streets, yesterday morning, and continued throughont the day. Atilo’clock a. m., Rey. Dr. Durbin, D.Y, Secretary ot the Missionary Society of the M. E. Charch, presched an able and feel. ing sermon, from ibe 4:h chapter, Ist and 24 verses Timothy. At3 o’clock in the afternoon, the series were continned under the auspices of the Sabbath School, Mr. S. H. McClosky in the chair. After Singing and prayer, the Hon. M. F. Odell of New York, made a most appropriate speech to | the children. The children then made their annul offering, each class placing their dona- tions in 4 beautiful basket of flowers, and con- | veyed ft to the altnr. Addresses were aiso made by Hon. J. 8S. Deaht and others, At 7% o'clock, a public meeting was held, and atter singing of kymn No. 999, and prayer by Rey. Mr. Lanshan. the Hon. S. P. Cnaea was conducted to.the chair, upon taking of which he made a few pleasing remark-. The atev. Cyrus D. Foss, of Brooklyn, N. Y., then delivered an address. After the conclusion of the gentleman's re. Marks, the pastor of the church, (Rev. Mr. Browun,) proposed that the H Ss. P. Chase should be constituted a life director of the so. ciety.
