,. AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT. Yor»'s THEATER.— Maggie Mitchell will to- night again sppene ae “Amy,” in the «Little Barefcot,” and Manager Ford announces that this is the last pertormance bat two of this play. Maggie is charming as ever Her characters Sre sll earetally studied, and she is therefore enabled to represent them, with a naturalness truly refreshing. To-morrow night she will take a benefit. CanTRBRBURY.—The “ghost” has run itself into the ground (where it belongs) at every place of amusercent except Canterbury. Man- ager Sinn keeps it up, aad it continues to prove €nm attraction. But jarge numbers also resort to Canterbury to witaess the splendid dancing of the sisters Clara and Millie Fowler, and the varied performa. ces of the regular company. Vanreties.—The performances at the Varie- ties ure always interesting, and ‘they are especially £0 ROW On account of the presence there of Annetta Galetti, Mons. Tophoff and Rozani and bis. ballet troupe. Besides these a pomber of pretty girls und a fine corps of Ethiepiau performers alse asaist nightly at the entertainment, ached WYMAN, THE WIZARD, is. sfill at.Odd Fel- lows’ Hall, aud be continoes to driw good houses. He introduces nightly his life moving and speaking antomara. Wyman is decidediy amusing, and his -perfurmances always tend to cure the bines. BaLyt.—The McClellan Social Club will give them second grand bali at Temperance Halil to- night. The Holy Hill Band has been engaged, eud a good party will be-piven. 3 SE a Grover'’s THEATER.—Since the close ot the summer sestson the proprietors of this building, Messre. Spaulding and Rapley, haye been ma- King alterations and improvements nearly Rimounlivg to & reconstruction of the edifice. The capacity of the building has been increased to the extent of some 1,000 pereons: in fact, it will accommodate the same nomber, but much more comfortably, than did the “Old National,” well known as one cf the largest theaters in the country. The walls are built upon the foun- dations of the Old National wall, and are of the best and most solid description of masonry. But the greatest feature of improvement, per- baps, is the additional height to the building, rectifying some heretofore noticeable faults in the proportions of the room. As reconstructed, the theater will be one of the best designed and best arranged in the country. In the seating arrangements, the best Models have been followed, in order to secure | comfort for the audience and to afford those in @ll parts of the house a perfect vii w of the stage. ‘The first floor will beocenpied by the orches- tra and parquette seats; the second will be the 8 cre nd the third the gallery, with white and colored. The heavy, umbrous columns haye been replaced by light ones Of iron, of graceful design, and the forms | or the fixtures and appurtenances generally are of exceeding elegance and beauty. We are giad to see that great attention has been paid to ventilation in the new building—amost | important requisite, and one tov much neglect- ed am the constracuon of edifices calculated to accummmodate large numbers of people. 1n order to afford greater stage accommoda. | tions, & building of two stories, thirty by forty, will be constructed adjoining the theater for the dressing rooms and green room, leaving a clear siage of forty feet. Mir. Grover, the enterprising lessee of the theater, has a full corps of artists and deco- Tawrs ulready st work upon the stage; and hereabout we notice a couple or superb drop scenes taking shape under the spirited pencil of j the well. kno wn scene painter Strong. The work for the proprietors, Messrs. Spal- ding & Rapley, is being done under the immé¢- diate superiniendance of those excellent build- ers, Messr:. istle & Tron; painting and glazing, Parker & Spaldi ornamental work by Heath, of Philadelphia: draping by Carroll, of Philadelphis; plastering by $ ; iron work by Haywood & Bartictt, decorations by Carstein, principal decorator at the Oapiiol; gus fitung by Willitm Whelan, Georgetown. Some '20 workmen are no busily engazed upon the building, and Messrs. Entwistle & Barron expect, by working’ night and day, to have it completed about the middle of next week. It is also designed to have the front building covered in to the street, and carried up to a height to correspond with the tine hetel now being built on the site of the old Union office. Besides giviag space for a spacious lobby en- trance ‘or the theater, this addition wil! pro- vide room for four fine stores, 5v feet by 20 on the theater front, and four stories above, which upper stories have been leased for hotel pur- poses by the parties concerned in the adjoin- ing building. The theater structure will, when completed according to the plan, be universally coucedd to be one of the handsomest, most con venis: and best built edifices of the kind in the u- try; one that can te pointed to with pride by any citizen. Mr. Grover will in a short time open with the great combination of such actors as E. L. Davenport, J. W. Wallack and Mrs. Farrea, and a-stoex company of rare excellence. i Saas Tus Drart.—After our report closed yester- day, the following cuses were disposed of by the Board of Enroliment: Frederick Kiley, paid commutation: Harry Mortimer, alien. He accepted it temporarily three years ago and generously declined to receive asalary, pre- lerring that the means of the church should be applied to the reduction of ite debt. Believing that the church was now in acondition tosup- ort & pastor who could devote himself whol- 'y to the work, and finding the double duties of President of Columbian College and Pastor ‘preseing too beavily upon him, he thought he ought to be released from the careof the church.
