[Correspondence of the Chronicle.] NASHVILLE, Sept. 23.—The excitement ix un- abated in this city, and the public places, es- pecially the St. Cloud, Commercial. and Sew- ance Hotels, are crowded with anxious news hunters, news mongers, and “grape yine” operators. As far as I can learn, the news I have transmitted yon in relation to the battles ef Saturday and Sunday was, in the maia, trae. The General and hie brave hosts contested every inch of ground, and the retrograde muye- ment was slow, sure, and inexcellent order, The latest news I have is up to Monday night. The battle of this day is represented to haye been the severest contesi cf the war In my dispatch of last night I spoke of Longstreet’s men being engaged. This is now known to be a fact, as four or five hundred of his men have j taken prisoners, They say that they were er Hocd and Jackscn. They also report at Hood was seriously wounded Sunday evening, near Mission ridge. Until to-day the Union people have been gloomy, while merry faces showed rebel hearts. But this morumg the city was filled with all sorts of rumors re- garding the pet battalion of this place—the Rock Vity Gnards—to the eif-et that they had been terribly cut to pieces, and that the general commanding, George Manney, of this city, was severely wounced, Ti is aiso reported’ that Frank Cheatham, of this city, is wounded, and that Preston Suuin, ot Lebanon, has been killed. known t the nants of thirty-six ee regiments are in the battle, three of Te which—the Ist, zuth and —were wholly re. cruited here. ‘| Theve mu ertainly be somethiag wrong,(oa rr! The Rebel is published a Auania. [From the Associated Press.] NASHVILLE, Sept. 23.—The news from the front to-day is meager. There are no trains trom the South to-night. It is reported they are being detained to bring up the wounded. A telegram from the front reports no fighting to-day. Our forces still hold the position of yester- day, which is an evidence of strength, as every hour increases the chances for reinforcements fron. Burnside’s army to arrive, and enables our forces to prepare thoroughly and entrench themeelves. No definite assurance of their arrival has yet been received. Brig. Gen. John H. King is reported wound- ed anda prisoner. He is neither, A telegram from the front reports him all right. Major Coolidge, second in command of the same brigade, is certainly killed. Two hundred guerrillas, under Tom Mur- ray, are hovering about Carthage, threatening to attack that place. Aemall force is lurking abovt this vicinity, having its headquarters at Williamsport, west of Franklin, on Duck river. LovlsvVILLE, Sept. 23.—The Journal has re- ceived information, which it credits, that on Monday night the right and left wings of Rose- crans’ grand army rested on the battle-ground of Saturday and Sunday, and that reinforce. ments—the number is not stated—from Grant, yia Decatur, were to have reached him yester- day. Rosecrans’ headquarters were four milesfrom the battle-field, in the rear of the center. The General is in spirits, and hopetal of a complete and decisive victory.over Jobnston, Bragg and Longstreet. It is reported that A. P. Hill is in command of the Confederate forces opposed to Rosecrans. UISVILLB, Sept. 23, 12 o’clock, m.—A spe- cial from Nashville to the Journal, just re ceived, says there was slight skirmishing yes. terday in front of rans. Otherwise, all war quiet up to half past two o’clock in the ofternoon. (orricaL DI8PATCH.] Dispatches from Rosecrans dated Ohattanoo- ga, 3and 5 P. M., September 22d, were received by the Government yesterday morning, from which we learn that the enemy’s attack upon Gereral Thomas’ corps (Rosecrans’ left) on Monday afternoon, was handsomely repulsed, and General Thomas’s forces marched quietly to the position they were about to take when assaulted. The enemy’s lossin this repulse was severe. General Rosecran’s orders for his entire com- mand to concentrate was accomplished before midnight of the 20th, and are now ina strong defensive position, which can be easily held ‘until reinforcements come up. Tha movements of the troops was executed in excellent order, and although they had worked hard for several days and nights, were in wonderful fine spirits. Rosecransis now in the very position he should have occupied until reinforced, but it is weil knoyn that he acted upon the supposition, as he had the right to do, that reinforcements would reach him ona certain ony: It is neither Rosecrans's tault, nor that ot the Government bere, that he was mot reinforced betore battle of the 19th inst. The London Morning Post says:—«Some doubt has been cast upon the statement which we made a few days ago with reference to the steam Tams in course Of construction at Mr. iuuird’s yard. We can only ;epeat our certain- ty of its a@ccurancy. The Goverament haye given notice to the builder that the ships will not be ullowed to leave the Mersey, aud if it is found that their construction is contrary to the terms of the Foreign Enlistment Act, they ‘will be seized as violating its provisions.” The London Shipping Gazette still thinks that if the steam rams at Liverpool are de- rater arene only be by a stretch ot authority or which, of course, the xdyisers of the Crown would be held responsi +, ne Azo THE LATEST.
