The indications from the front to-day strike us as premonitory that Lee will make no serious opposition to Meade’s advance upon his present line, if that be his object. We come to this conclusion as we know that out troops. are already in positions which Lee could hardly have surrendered without a battle un- less determined not to fight this side of the for- tiflcations of Richmond. We judge that Meade already commands the fortificationsof the Rap- idan, which were eonstructed with great labor by the rebels; or at least has them at his mercy: et eae tS 5th BOS STEAMSHIP Vanbernitt Heard FRou.— Anxiety is felt (cays the Journal of Commerce) Tespecting the steamship Vanderbilt, owing to her protracted absence and Teports of her de- struction by rebel cruisers. That is, until after a thorough judicial investigation should demonstrate that they were not designed for that service. Their foreign enlistment law forbids the act of fur- nishing armed and equipped ships for such ser- vice. It was passed before iron-plated vessels were dreamed of. The English Government now take the ground that iron-plating a ship is equipping a vessel for war purposes; as a vessel so equipped is notoriously unfit ‘or any other purpose whatever. If the English law courts sustain this view, of which we imagine there can be little doubt, the last constructed Eng- lish rebel rams will perform no service in their cause; asin that event they will prove dead capita! on the nands of the speculating builders. We need hardly add that this act of the Eng- lish Ministry, evincing as it does, that they really purpose to maintain good faith with us, has already had the happiest effect here; that is. upon our relations towards her Majesty’s Government. As we knew that this Government felt it iaocumtent on it in courtesy, to permit that of England to arnounce the fact of its purpose to try the question of the liability of iron-plated ships under their Foreign Enlistment Act, in | its own way and at its own time we have re- frained from alluding to it until now, when it reaches this country promulged by the English authorities through their own journals 137 NEW YORE RATES—3 0 OLOOK P. Several of the journeymen were looking at the engine; whilst examining the same, some part of the engine began to screak. The foreman heard and oiled the screaking part. Then another part screaked still louder; he gave this oil, und much to his astonishment the first de- fective part broke out in a still more disagree- able screak, and all the oil had no effect. Polkinhorn, coming up at this time, and hear- ing the noise, cried out, «Why do you not at- tend to the engine?” He was answered by a burst of laughter, when,’ turning round, he beheld Wyman, the ventriloquist, who was amusing his friends by his peculiar powers. Polkinhorn and the foreman sloped, swearing that if they heard the boiler explode whilst Wyman was in the city they would not believe it. furnished substitute— ARREST OF A REBEL COLONBL.
