GOOD NEWS FROM CHATTANOUGA. ——— LONGSTREET DEFEATED! ame SSS) THOMAS BPFECTS A JUNCTION WITH ROSB- CRANS AT CHATTANOOGA, AND THE COMBINED ARMY NOW IN AN IM- PREGNABLE POSITION. es THE REBEL LOSSES UKAVIER THAN .OURS. ee ROSECRANS BEING RAPIDLY REINFORCED. —— RICHMOND LEFT UNCOVERED BY TUE DE- PLETION OF LEE’S ARMY TO REINFORCE BRAGG. ———— . Dispatches up to yesterday (Tuesday) morn- ing have been received here from Chattanooga. They announce that our army was duly con- ccentrated at Chattanooga before daybreak yes- terday morning. An unofficial dispatch (frem Chattanooga) to an army officer speaks of the engagement of Monday last, when Longstreet’s corps attacked the corps of Thomas, as a complete Union i victory. The fact that Thomas was able to join Rosecrans at Chattanooga on Monday night embraces positive confirmation of this | dispatch. The movement of the rebels against Rose- ¢rans, we may now say with confidence, has | resulted in’a most disastrous failure to them, They staked all on annihilating his army, at- tacking him with Bragg’s army, a portion of Pemberton’s late command, all Johnston’s army, troops drawn from Richmond, all Long- street's artillery and most of his infantry, In the first two days fighting their losses were heavier than ours. In Monday's fighting they were easily repulsed, as it turns out. They can do no more in that quarter, as Rosecrans, who is being rspidly reinforced, holds a posi- tion in which he can defy double their number, To enable Bragg to make this abortive effort, they have probably left Richmond at our mer- cy. A very few days will suffice, we believe, to render this fact patent to the world, REBEL “GREAT EXPECTATIONS" BLASTED Gen. Graham, who commanded one of our brigades at Gettysburg, and was taken pris- oner and conveyed to Richmond, has recently been exchanged, and reached here this morn- ing. He communicates important information to the Government. He is satisfied that only two divisions of Longstreet’s corps, with ail his artillery, haye been sent to Bragg. In addition to that, two brigades under General Pickett, and Wise’s Legion were also detailed to reinforce Bragg. Gen. Graham says hesaw cighty-one pieces of cannon moving across the bridge from Richmond, said to be going to Bragg. The news of the battles fought between Bragz and Rosecrans was a disappointment to the rebel authorities at Richmond. They expected to hear that Rosecrans had been annihilated, and Bragg had retaken East Tennessee. Instead of that they are compelled to admit terrible losses in men and officers, and that «the onemy still confronts them.” ee NAVAL ORDERS. Captain Henry Walker, ordered to command the Sacramento. It is fortunate indeed for the cause that he ean thus hold oral council with the heads of the Government without being absent from his headquarters as leng as it would take him to pass through tho Jines of his army. Reddy, alias Tom the Creeper. Donovsn left his hack and team with Mr. Mullett, where the number was changed from 306 to 4, pasting ihe false over the gen- uine number. Mullett was also arrested, but was subse- quently dismissed, there being no evidence againsthim. During the absence of the detec- tives in pursuitof Donovan, McNemara escaped from the Second Ward station; the cells of which are very insecure, the fastenings, by constant usage, having become loose and easy to be moved from the catches. Donovan con- iessed enough to implicate all in the robbery, Reddy George has uot been arrested, but will hardly escape. The case was heard to-day at eleven o'clock, before Justice Clayton. Atthe hearing, Lieut Quigley swore to the facts of being robbed. ‘Wm. Mulien testified that he drove Thomas Donovan, alias Reddy, across the Eastern Branch, and that Reddy remarked to him that he was going away because he was afraid he (D.) would be arrested. Lovisa Stetler and Rose Sherwood, two of Madam Joe’s boarders, testified tnat Lieut. Quigley, accompanied by the prisoner, Red George and john Mack, (McNamara) visited Madam Joe’s, and while there tha Lieutenant spentagreat deal of money, and treated all round, Louisa testified that Red George said they were “going to make a stak*,"’ out of the Lieutenant, and Rose swore that Donovan (the prisoner) took her into a sida room and tuid her thesame thing. Rose then went to Lieut. Q. and told him he had better look out for those backmen, as it was night, und she (Rose) tried to persuade him to stay All night. Quigley, however, refused, and after some parley as to the price demanded by the hackman, (310) he paid it and asked to be taken to his hotel, and the party then went off. Detectives Barry and Kelley testitied to the fact of having arrested Donovan at Rose’s Biufl, where he was working on the fortifica- Uons and had givem his name as Thos. Reddy. At the conclusion of the testimony, the pri- soner desired to make a statement; and after he had been warned by Justice Clayton that he should say nothing that would criminate him- self, he acknowledged that he was with Lieut. Cluigley on the Sunday night referred to, and that the hack used was his. Mack, however, droye the hack until they left Madam Joe’s, when McNamara got inside with the Lienten- ant, and instexd of driving tothe National they drove to Third and G streets south, when McNamara, the ieutenant and Red George got out and walked awsy, leaving him (the prisoner) on_ the hack box. A few moments afterwards Mack and Red George returned alone, and said they had left Quigley at a house to which they had gone, and the party then came back to the city. Donovan said he was the owner of the hack, but could give no good reason why he allowed McNamara to pretend ownership; and he was therefore committed to jail for court.
