HOPKINS, Where ne'er tue The blessedness fr: —-— CongREGATIONAL Singing. —The Boston Transcript of the 23d inst. says that the audi- ence at Park Street Church were taken quite by surprise last Sunday morning, at the an- nouncement from the desk that the “ choir” had out, and if any singing was to be had that day, it must be done by the congre- gation. Tothisthe congregation responded with a readiness and alacrity that was tral: wonderful. They rose from their seats as with one impulse, and entered into the service of the occasion with heart and sonl Such was the effect, that but one opinion seems to pre- vail as to this mode, over that which has been usual in this church, and we learn that a strong disposition is manifested by a portion uf the society to resort hereafter to this form of church music. The occasion of this flare-up was the election of a mow director tv the post recently held by Messrs. Johnson and Fro who have had charge of the musical arrangements of this chureh for some years past Supposing that their services were indispensible, the large choir, numbering about 60 singers, refused to sing except under their former leaders, but like many other persons who attempt to dictate, they found themselves not only not necessary to the successful carrying on of public worship, but by their str: and inexcusable conduct have raised a doubt whether upon the whole = services cannot be entirely dispensed wi .
