i ol ee —_—_—_ — - C—O Ct = — |) eee EVENING STAR. —— Tus Prxz anp oe Oprra btesaeghh he suecess of this celebrated company at tether Va., has far exceeded the anticipa- tions of Manager Ford, and a renewal of the term of their en, mnt generally demand- ed, but our music-loving citizens, will, with ardonable selfishness rejoice to learn thatthe | ere of the public of that city have been made to give to their requirements, and that for a b: season of four nights, com- mencing on Wednesday el next, we are to be agaim permitted the delightful and bril- Tiant performances of this capable company. Auber’s graceful and kling opera of “The Crown Diamonds,”’ commence their second series of representations in our city, followed on the ——e three evenings by Rossini’s world-famed and exquisitely beautiful legend- ary opera entitled “ Cinderella or the Little Glass Slipper.” Asa final occasion of hearing the sweetest, and most gifted vocalist in the vernacular, that has ever crossed the Atlantic, and with a deserved consideration of the sur- passing merits of the popular Meme re & we uestion not the National Theatre will, during their stay, be nightly crowded Hewp To Batt —Saturday, Justice D Smith heard the testimony in the case of Samuel Russell and William R Mason, who were ebarged with the larceny of a quantity of corn. After a long and tedious investigation, Russell was held to bail m $300 for his ap- pearance at the Criminal Court; and Mason was dismissed 2s a principal, and held to bail for bis a Trance as a witness. Oscar Wilson, a boy, was arrested by Officer Wollard on a charge of larceny. He was sent to jail by Justice Smith. ‘oe Brown, colored, supposed to be a slave, was arrected for stealing chickens belonging to Mr H. Ingh : —_ — — _— t ickens of hiut, they being found in her ead , she was accused. Luckily she saw _ in the market last Saturday night, and Officer Burr. He was Justice D. Smith. had him arrested b sent to jail for court Sritt ANoTHER BurGiary —The boarding house kept by Mrs. Williams, on Eighth street near the avenue, was broken into last nigh! the di room entered, and the Sdebeg ransack Luckily, the plate had been re- moved the night previous, by the servant, and the thieves co: ently got little more than their labor for their pains. No clue has been obtained thus far to lead to their detection, but it seems quite impossible that these nightly attempts at housebreaking and pillage ean continue long without the guilty partics being discovered. How ro Cook Suap —Shad are exvellent when baked, either on a board, which is the best, or by the following mode: Stuff them with a seq Soning mate = bread i amy weds vper, and (if agreeable) parsley es pole Tout the fish in a baking dish, with a cupful or Water and a lump of butter. Posticat Reaprves.—We learn that th.* accomplished Miss Emily Lesdernier is in the city, and will shortly give one of her most pular readings, consisting of selections from avorite authors. These readings, as given by Miss Lesdernier in other cities, have proved most attractive, and drawn large and fashior - able audiences; and we do not doubt that such will be the case here. She is a fine poetesr, and her contributions to different pa- rsand magazines have had 2 wide popu- arity. One who writes so well herself will surely be able to do justice to the poetry of others. Ciganine Mattixc —Doubtiess many of our citizens are about to lay down their matting in place of the warm looking carpets that kept things in such a comfortable glow through the Winter months ; and, as the mattings may have become soiled or discolored by standing in some dusty place, we would suggest a simple manner of cleaning them Kub, (or in the housemaid’s language.) scrub them well, after tacking them down, with a large cloth satu- rated with salt and water. The salt prevents the matting turning yellow. Disaprointen.—Yesterday, quite a crowd assembled on the hill northe: the County jail, in the Fourth Ward. They ex to see a fight in that vicinity, but we are glad _ say weap oe We are — sure, ut think the law recognizes such ga’ mi - as disorderly assembl: It anes to the law, that the lookers-on who fail to use their endeavors to prevent a breach of the peace, should be held and punished with the peace-breakers. Tax City Disparcu.—We would again call attention to the great usefulness ef that pub- lic messenger, the City Dispatch. A large number of the business mer of the city can testify to its promptitude and reliability. The business is conducted with clock-like regular- ity, aud it is a rare thing indeed for any com- plaint to be made at headquarters. is is Saying ah pm deal for th Tgy and perze- verance of its enterprising and gentlemanly proprietor. Tax Mocyrep Gvarps were preparing ear- ly this morning for their grand target firing and dinner at Sanderson’s to-day. Quite a number of guests have been invited, and the honorary members appear to be anxious to secure early shots for their prize’ We have before deserbed the prizes, and will endeavor to give the results of the shooting as early as possible Dearu prow Eatine Matcuns —Last week a child died suddenly in the Fifth Ward. Upon an examination of the circumstances connected with its death, the fact was discov- ered that a number of friction matches had fallen into its hands, and the poor child had eaten the heads from them. he physicians decided that this was the cause: of death. Ratiyixe Carre Persons using rallying cries, or words calculated to create riot er breach of the peace, while hauling or follow- ing any fire engine or apparatus, are subject to a fine of five dollars fur every offence [See section 15 of ‘ An act to o: ize and Se the fire department ’’| © publish this by request. Fisutows —Yesterday, this interesting por- tion of Alexandria, Va, was visited by a large number of strangers and citizens of Washington. Many expressed surprise at the reat heaps of fish upon the wharf, and the oatloads thrown away. Herring were sell- ing for $1 25a$1 75 per thousand, during the day. Shad sold at $6487 per hundred. More Strong Baraxine.—Friday night Mr. Frailey’s grocery store, and Boswell’s drug store, both located in the Seventh Ward, were eutered by thieves, who forced the door with acrow-bar. The robbers obtained about $43 in money from Mr. Frailey’s, but from the drug store nothing was taken Uysters, Crans, &c —A daily arrange- ment with Norfolk and Rappahannock pack- et2, and from Annapolis by Railroad, for Pickled Oysters, and Soft and Hard Shell Crabs, warranted perfectly fresh, at Drake's Restaurant, south east corner E and Seventh Streets f Tux Pair of the colored Baptist church is mill in fine operation, we learn, at the corner of Ninth and D streets. Tae atrention of the proper authorities is respectfally called to the condition of Missouri avenue the corner of Third street, where the gutter is so blocked up as to cause the street to be flooded. Corrsction.—I{n the list of delegates for the Mayoralty convention from the Second Ward read George W. Stewart in place of scree M. Stewart, as printed in Friday's Disonperty.—John Minor, (colored,) for Wing rallying cries, and being otherwise dis- Srderly, was made to pay a fine and costs by Sastice Ho!liogshead. i at Tey w Fire Connecrion or Or, Patntixes ron advertisemen Sans.—! ny t in another col- uma it will be seen that a superior collection of oil paintings, the property of a gentleman , will be sold by of Baltimore, lately dece Mr. J.C. Among the pic- tures will be found a copy of Leutze’s ‘‘ Wash- ington crossing the Delaware,” ‘‘The Tra: 8 Last Shot,”’ and other fine modern paintings. For Court.—At the time appointed for the hearing of testimony in the case of the United States vs. A. R. Allen, who was charged with an assault and battery on Franklin 0 Bryon, in the National Theatre, Mr. Allen a peared before Justice Clark, and gave bail in the sum of $400 to appear at the Criminal Court. This was done to avoid a lengthy examination before a magistrate. Farr or tHe Sixtu Prespyrertan Caurcu. We like all fairs, but this one es- are Its articles for sale, are tasteful ; its eatables, superb ; its elephant is an entire menagerie in itself; and its ladies are undoubt edly the fairest of the fair. Tae Recent OrpHans’ Farr.—The aggre- gate sum received by the rec fair at Ca- rusi’s for the Orphan’s of St. Vincent’s Asy- lum, will be very near $5,000 Such a result tells of the practical effect of late efforts in our midst to cry down the utility of the va- rious institutions of the sisters.
