SaTUEDAY EVENING, April 25, There was an increased demand for money to- day, and rates of diecount wero firmer. The banks generallv repors that bueiness has been mpioviag for the last ten days. There i8 & sense of security on every side, from ths refusal of the [President to permit &ny inflation of the currency, that cannot fail to ekow itself soon in groater activity and entorpriso in ail branches of trado snd industry. No such cffect is yet to be kecn. Business hus experienced no change that can bo ascribed to the veto, The movement in gold and the fluctuations in Kew York stocks are the only sigus of disturbance it has produced, and these aro but temporary. Tho operations of the Clearing-House to-day were $2,500,000. The returns for the week ar Clearings, $17,180,770.79; balances, 1,987, 006.40. The figures for the corresponding week 1sst year ware £17,908,504.27 and ©1,936,895.16. Exchange on New York was very scarce at 50c premiom for $1,000. Business is still reported very quist in the country, and collections are poor. THE COFFE TRADE. The importation of coffee to Chicago has al- ready sssumed large proportions, and is likely to becoms an important branchof the trade of thia city. It has been found that coffee can be prought here direct from Rio Janeiro by way of ‘Boston, and sold in competition with that bronght from New York, which has hitherto been & source of supply to this market. One firm is now importing 4,000 bags a month, the average value of which is $100,000 in goid. The coffes is landed in_Boston within five feet of tho cars of the Doston & Albany Road, by which line and its connection the N. Y. Ceun- trel aud Lake Shors, it is shipped hither. By this Tonto the insurance, wharfuge. brokerage, and other tolls and charges which are found so bur- densome by importers at New York are avoided, &t a saving of more than half a cent a pound. The contract with the railroads gives this shipper the advantage of 15 cents 8 hundred pounds. As the coffeo is sold here at the New York price plus the freight, it will be seen that the margin for profit is large enough for other merchants to embark in the same enterprise. From this poiut Northwest with ease and littlo expense. Other ‘branches of the grocery trade have already found themselves bencfited by the diverson of the towns in tho interior fiom New York to this int, and no good reason is apparent why all o satfen whish 18 sold here, amountivg_to 15,000 or 20,000 bags o month, should not bo im- ported by Chicago dealers on’ their own account £o their profit, and the great advantage of the trade of Chicago. Live hioge, No. Cattle, No. Flour, brls, ¥ produce markets were quite firm to-day, with & steady feeling all round ; there being s good demand for most articles at yester- day's prices. Tho shipping movement was rather light, for the day, but the bulletin showed 2 largo quantity of grain cleared yesterday, and the shipments from the seaboard during the weck were vry liberal, Now York alone baving exported somothing like 500,000 bu wheat and 775,000 bu corn. This gave confidence in tho futuro of prices, in tho face of depressing nows from Europe. Dry-goods were active and firm for staple and scasonable lines. Prices were the same as on yesterday. Thoe grocery-trade was roported reasonably active for sngars, sirups, rice, teas, and _most other acticles, coffea being tho only notable excoption. Buvers still entortain tho opinion that materialiy lowar prices will prevail Iater in tho season, aud.they cannot bo induced to order larger quantities than seem to be re- quisite to meet the current wanta of the trado. Stocks here aro light, coneequently thero is no great preasure to sell, but thero s more or less “ cutting " all around, and the market must bo quoted weak. Butter was held with rather more confidence, the reported advance of 'f@:ac in New York tonding to strengthen the views of holders. The market cannot be considered strong. however, sellers continuing to shade tho quoted prices when such & course 18 necassary in order to effect s sale. Cheese is in good roquest 8t firmly-sustained prices. Cauned goods continue dull, with little change in prices. The dried fruit market displays a fair degreo of animation, and & fair tone both for Iornllfn sud domestic varieties. BStocks are small, and some descriptions will probably ad- vauce, No changes worthy of nots were ap- parent in the leather, tobacco, pig iron, sud wood markets. Bagging was quiet and steady at Sic: for Stark, 823gc for Lowiston, and 29ige for American. There was 2 good demand for oils at firmly sustained prices. Lumber atloat was moderately active at abont the samo rango of prices. Common to choice boards wero tolerably steady, and piece stuff sold at $10.00@10.50, the "inside for 1G-foot lengths. At the yards a fair interior business in the ni;gxegnta was transaoted for tho season, but the local demand is still of a limited charac- ter. Iron, building materials, and nails were in' moderate demand. Hardware and motals wero again reported active on interior account, and nearly all the articles mentioned in the List were steady st recent quo- tations, excopt pig-tin and American Russia iron, which are quoted lower, Wool was quict, and fleece-washed is easier. Hidea wero ateady, though the demand at the moment is less nr- gent, owing to reporta of & decline East, and, 1n consequence, buyers aro disposed to operate with caution until something more definite can be learued. Hops wers quiet, and broom corn in light order request. Sceda ‘were rather quiet, ‘but choice samples were held steadily. Poultry was ip good local demand, scarce, and firmer. Lake freights were dull at about the same rotes as on I'ridey, at 4}¢c for moderate-sized vessels, on corn to Buffalo. Only 5 charters wero reported, which will carry out 14,000 bu wheat, and 83,000 bu corn. The advices from the neighborhood of the Straights of Mackinaw ‘were not_very favorable to a speedy open- ing of navigation, the ice being reporied solid. Some vesselsare etill unnigged, tho ownorsstating. it to bo their intention not to prapare to sail un- less rates improve. Wo note that tho agrregate of grain loaded in- to vessels this season to date, at this port, is as follows:: . 502,074 bu_ wheat, 825,085 bo corn, 111.000 bu oats, and 14,400 bu barley. Total, 1,453,459 bu; of which s considerable propor- tion has been loaded on owners’ account. One or two shippers have quietly taken the offerings of veseel room at present rates, believing that they cannot go lower, but the majority aro evi- dently afraid of them., Highwines_wero in good demand, snd lc higher, sales being reported of 200 brls at 95 ver gallon. The production was cut down somewhat by the temperance movement; and, novw that tha agitation has submded, thereis & better demand, with comparatively light stocks to moet it. The merkets at other points are strong, though not relatively g0 firm as ours. Provisions were less active, but very stoady, and a shode firmer. The leading arficle was Iard, which was wanted yestorday afternoon by Cincinnati buyers, and they took hold again this morning, though not willing to concede an ad- vance. Lardisin small stock in that city, and is belioved to be in rather scant supply in most other places, except Chicago, and thero has been a liberal export movement from this city during the past week. Prices to-dsy average 5@Tc per 100 Ibs higher, Liverpool being quoted firm &t the advance of yesterdsy afternoon. Mess pork was very qniet, but 5¢ per brl higher, in sympathy with lard.
