MONETARY. Fripar EVENING, Feb. 2. There are & good many business men in Chi- cago, us thero are also doubtless in other cities, who admit that money is very plenty for loan on collaternls, but at the same time are disposed to agree with Senators Ferry, Morton, and Logan thet “money is tight,” becauso it is not so plenty for loan without security. They claim that becanso some merchants, but particolarly manufacturers, cannot borrow money on their simple notes of hand, without collateral sgecurity, money must be tight. Now, tho admission of these geotlemen that money is abundant for losus where satisfactory security 18 offered proves at least that thero is plenty of money sceking employment in safe and conservative investments. * But,” ay these gentlemen, ** it is & new custom among bankert to demand collateral security of 8o large » proportion of their borrowers. It used to bo that merchants and mannfacturers in good stsnding conld get from banks all the money they wantoed on their simple notes of hand, and the changs of policy in this respect must be be- cause there is nob 8o much money as there used tobe.” ' While wo hava claimed, and do yet, that money is unusually sbundant in the West, we do not deny that it is loaned with more csution than it nsed to be, and that, while there are yet plenty of merchants who can borrow all the money they ack for on their own names, gecnrity is required in more cases than formerly. This is all the foundation there is for the clsim of Ferry, Logau & Co. that “ moeey is tight.” The explanation of this is, that there_is less coniidence in the future expansion and profits of trede than there was before the pauic. The feet is dhat the ten yearsup to thetime of the panic were an era of excessive railroad expan- sion, & cousequant oxcessive expansion of trade, and Sn excessive increase of manufacturing, in- duced by the wild extension of railroads and the fostering infinence of & protective farifl, There is no question_but that many kinds of smanufacturing have been * overdone.” Thera has been an excessivo increase of the bmldings, machinery, 8ad sppliances for manufscturing a class of articles for which the cunsumg- tive demand is limited,—articles whic! being bouglt, lsst the purchaser 8 good many years. Of this class of articles are car- pots, ~ furniture, agricultural impluments, watches, jewelry, etc., etc. Theso thirgs, of course, do ot last a lifetime, but the cousump- tion is 'slow, and the means of production had boon increatied beyond the legitimate demands of congumers of tho goods. During the flush {imes of the railroad-expansion ers, all this class of - manufacturing was sustained by the crtravagant scale of living that’ was prevalect. Tho manufaciuning interests Shich were more directly dependent ,on -the cxtension of railroads also flourished. Put when the collapse of speculativo railroad sehiemes came, it was also the signal for the ces- gation of this abnormal activity in manufactur- ing. Trede in these branches sbrunk to its nor- sl volume, and made a shrinkage of greater or less extent in all other branches of businesa, The point we mako in this connection is that capitalists see that nothing, not even inflation and depreciation of the currency, will revive rail- 7ond expansion, and that, for o year or two at Jegzt, it could pot revive the exfravagent scalo of living which sustained a vast amount of man- ufactunng and- trading which was part- Iy icedentsl to the railrond fe- ver, sud partly due to the influcnce of the tariff. Hence there is doubt about the future profitableness, or even the con- finuance, of many classes of busivess, and, con- sequently, when men engaged in the thoussad varieties of this class of business ask for the 1oan of money, they are asked for collateral se- Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland & dinnapolis was exceptionally sutive, rledx:um_t; rom 84 t0 70, and advancing again to 8% Thia decline and decided rally was due o rumors that the contest for the election was over, and that a compromiss had been agreed up for the Pacific Mail Steamshij 'y Francisca bes been instructed to materially re- duce passenger fares to and fro view to successful competition w Penpinsular and Oriental route.
