PAGE TWELVE WOMAN'S. PART [steer I POLITICS {6 TOPIC AT CLUB Business and Profes- sional Women Hear Several Talk. ‘The regular meeting of the B. & P. W. club was held at the Henning hotel yesterday noon at which time Miss Olive Barker presided. Miss Lorraine Winslow very interesting talk on “Women in Politics” taken from an article by Mayme Ober Peak and which ap peared in an issue of the Outlook magazine. She stated that politics truly affects the boys and girls schoo! lige and in turn their fam- fifes. She then discussed the pledge of the National Woman's party which {3 as follows: gave a “Believing in government by the People, for the peuple, I will do my best r inform myself about public qu ons. the principles and Polici c litical parties, and the qualifications of candidates for which I am entitled to vote. Second: To vote according to my conscience In every election at which I am entitled to vote “Third: To obey the law, even if I am not in sympathy with all its provisions, Fourth: To support by all fair means the policies I approve. “Fifth: To regard my citizenship @s a public trust.” Miss Edith Davis made a very in- teresting talk on “The National Wo- man's Party.” She discussed the measures used ky Alice Paul, its chairman, by “ch she managed to keep the suffrage issue a live one all through the war when the whole nation was thinking of what. w happening in Europe. Miss Paul was urged constantly during the ‘war to turn her energies comple tely to the furtherance of the war but she never lost sight of the purpose of the National Woman's party but worked with untiring energy to. wards its accomplishments, Miss Sarah Lee Anderson, was secretary to Alice Paul, tional chairman of the party from 1918 to 1921, gave a very interesting sketch of the life of Miss Paul. In 1914 Miss Paul or. ganized the National Woman’s party. She had one object in view, that of securing suffrage for a!l women In the United States by an amendment to the United States constitution. A great many, people think that in order to be a suffragist and a leader in woman's affairs, she must be masculine in actions and appear- ance. Miss Paul completely refutes this {dea. One of Miss Paul's able assistants In the suffrage campaign and who deserves’ a great deal of credit was Inez M. Boissevain. In 1920 Alice Paul was successful in having a marble bust of each of the three suffrage pioneers, Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, placed in the main rotunda of the United States capitol. Up to this time there had been only one statue of a woman ac- corded the honor of being placed in the national capitol, that of Fran- ces Williard. Miss Paul 1s now di- recting her efforts toward an equal rights amendment to the United States constitution Dr. Harned favored the club mem. bers with two vocal selections which were enjoyed by all. It was announced that several of the members were giving a waffle party Sunday afternoon from 4:30 to 7:30 at Miss Wrensted’s studio in he O. & S. bui'ding. sata sek NE In the 24 years that its pension system has been in operation the Pennsylvania ratlroad has paid out $32,187,868 to its retired employes. who na- Woman's Is Kindled With Savings CEDAR RAPIDS, March 23.— After withdrawing his entire life savings of $2,075 from the bank, Frank Harnish, 46-year old labor- er, purchased a quantity of “fire water.” built a fire at the curb on a downtown street and started to burn bundles of $20 and $50 bt The prompt interference by po- Ice prevented Frank from having a $2,000 fire. Eberstein will address the Lutheran Men’s club at thelr next regular meeting to be held Friday evenin April 4, in the Heninng hotel banquet room. He will de- velop the subject—“Christianity in Business." The wonderful spirit of the brotherhood of man is taking ‘oot deeper and deeper into our American business institutions. The corporations of today are extending industrial re'ationship to their em ployes to a greater and ever increas- ing degree. This fraternizing be- tween the managers and the work- men gives to men a voice that is heard and reckoned with in a peaceful and orderly manner and is of untold value to the company, to the employe and to the consumer. Men are not only given a voice in the running of the business but they are also given an opportunity to share in the profits. Surely this is brotherhood. H. M. Newland, H. E. Guthrie and Jeff Love will again be on hand to reception to be given for the 'T. B. Uber in May. Visitors are welcome. 13 DEAD IN RAIL CRASH AT MOSCOW MOSCOW, March 22.—Thirteen persons were killed and 16 others seriously Injured when an express train left the track and overturned near Tashkent, due to malic'ous tampering with the ra‘Is by parties unknown, Investigation proved a de'iberate attempt to wreck the train, Tashkent is capital Turkestan. eS The cultivation of sugar beets in England last year showed a marked advance, ‘the total acreage being just double that of the previous year.
