IS NEW PROCEDURE IN PREPARING OILS Bolvent Extraction Also Is In- novation Which Adds to Quality Lubricants Motor vehicle operators still are little aware of important changes which have taken place in the motor oils offered them by some of the leading suppliers. ‘The oils are thinner and purer than they used to be, and at the same time they offer dependable lubrica- tion over a wider range of tempera- tures than ever before. Back of these improvements are two radical changes in manufactur- dng methods which have been tak- ing place over the last four years. ‘These are known as solvent extraction @nd propane dewaxing. The base stocks from which motor fils are made contain wax, asphalt, and other impurities. Old processes for removing these impurities were slow, expensive, and relatively ineffi- cient. The new processes take them @ll out swiftly and economically. Anyone who has ever used a shav- lotion has felt the coolness on his face as the alcohol evaporated. The game principle of physics, that evap- ration brings reduction of tempera- ure, is used in propane dewaxing. Propane is a light petroleum gas ‘at ordinary temperatures and pres- @ures, but it can be liquefied by ap- “Serene of about 150 pounds pressure. liquid form it is clear, colorless, f@nd only about half as heavy as fwater. ‘When a heavy oil stock is dissolved fn this liquid and the pressure is re- feased part of the liquid propane “boils off,” turning again into gas. This evaporation process, with the re- ease of pressure, chills the mixture as the evaporating shaving lotion ‘oools the shaver’s face, only toa much Greater extent, The temperature of the mixture quickly falls to 40 de- grees below zero, and the extreme cold causes all the wax in the oil to harden Anto crystals or particles, These par- ticles can be filtered out approxi- mately 100 times as rapidly as wax Could be removed by the old process @f ordinary refrigeration. ‘There is left behind a fine stock from which to complete an oil that will stand any normal degree of cold without any tendency to solidify. The propane is distilled from the dewaxed il so that the oil has @ high flash point and the propane can be used over again. Propane dewaxing not only gives the motorist low pour-point oil, which will flow at temperatures far below sero; it also simplifies refining. Much less expensive refrigerating equipment is necessary, since the pro- pane process produces a low temper- ature more easily than any of the previous methods. Propane thins the ‘Airstream’ Becomes Companion to ‘Airflow’. For the more conservative automobile owners, De Soto introduces a companion to {ts radical “Air. flow” in the form of the “Airstream” model shown above This new product has all the mechanical and riding advantages of the “Airflow” and yet does not depart so distinctly from standard design. Many re- fineries still are using these methods. They have the drawback that they are expensive and leave undesirable residual products in the oil. So great a revolution has this pro- cess caused that it now is being taken up by other refiners, regardless of whether they are using Mid-Con- tinent, Pennsyivania, or other crude oils as base stocks. Its efficiency en- ables any refiner using it to produce @ better oil than can be produced by old treating methods no matter what base oil is taken. | i BF a 2 i z : i iZ i i B & they Fite og8a i H gf Front Valve Seat Inserts ¢ New Ventilated Clutch Chromium- Plated Headlights Upholstery 18 BIG, handsome Airstream De Soto costs just a few dol- Jars more than thelowest-pricedcars!
