There was a belief that ln’ some day will’ come ‘when everyone will have hig’ automobile and there will be no more to sell. Only the up-and-coming leaders of the industry would therefore survive to take care of the motorists wishing to replace their old cars with new. But soon the country realized that this idea of saturation was only a myth. Soon we saw that two cars, and now three cars, came into use in single families and that there seemed to be no end to the demand for more automobiles. So the fear of saturation was dispelled. Later, in its place, came the dread of the used automobile. for the junk heap that were being traded in annually for new cars. Would there be enough buyers of these to take them all up, and if so how many of these buyers would leave other “trade-ins” for the dealers to worry about? The problem seerhed to be insolible and inescapable. But at last the same thing is happening to this as happened to the saturation myth. We are finding this to be a baseless fear. We find the trade-in problem solving itself. 3 No greater authority than Alfred P. He made the General Motors, assures'us that henceforth only obsolete auto- mobiles—those immediately ready for the junk heap—will be traded in for new cars. In fact, the motoring public is so great that every manufacturer now in the business will have his hands full satisfying the demand for new cars to replace the automobiles that are becoming obsolete. Even those motorists who have been in the habit of buying only used cars have-be- come so great a portion of the motoring public that the problem soon will be how to satisfy their demand for used cars, rather than how to take care of any oversupply of such automobiles. Thus the great problems of the automotive industry, much like those of other industries, have turned out mere myths, pany. baseless fears..
