HOOVER'S FAITH ATTACKED SAYS MOSES’ ANSWER Declares Raskob Clutches at Straws Like Drowning Man in Statement New York, Nov. 1—(AP)—Sena- tor George H. Moses of New Hamp- shire, vice chairman of the Repub- lican eastern advisory committee is- sued a statement today in comment on a letter sent by John J. Raskob, Democratic national chairman, to Dr. Hubert Work, Republican tional chairman, in which Raskob charged that persons associated with Mr. Work’s committee were promoting attacks on Governor Smith because of his religion. Raskob enclosed a_ photostatic copy of the letter purporting to be from Senator Moses to “Hon. Zeb ‘Vance Walser, Lexington, Ky. Which an article Raskob called vi- ciously anti-Catholic was referred to as “red hot stuff.” “Who is this John J. Raskob who seems to be so agitated because a southern Democrat has written something which I thought to be ‘hot stuff’,” Senator Moses asked in his statement. Flays Raskob “He is the chairman of the Demo- cratic national committee whose St. Louis headquarters have been busy for weeks in flooding certain sec- tions of the country with vicious at- tacks upon Mr. Hoover's religious faith. These attacks have been sent out officially under the seal of the sign-manual of Mr. Raskob’s com- mittee. } .. “Why is it that in these closing days of the campaign Mr. Raskob ‘and his candidate seem to be taking the field like the Mohammedans un- furling the green flag with the fly- fre horses’ tail and proclaiming a oly war? It is because the cause fs lost upon every issue which should envelope a political campaign and because of the desperation of all | n| during the year of her reign. BEAUTY QUEEN, SECRETLY MARRIED, IS FORCED TO ABDICATE HER THRONE Two Days After Coronation Leaves City on Her Belated Honeymoon St. Louis, Nov, 1.—The veiled Prophet is the venerable monarch from a mystic realm who visits this city once each year and, at a mag- nificent ball, chooses from the city’s society girls a queen of love and beauty. She reigns until her suc- cessor is chosen a year later. Today, St. Louis is without such a queen because the one His Maj- esty chose was found to have vio- lated one of his irrevocable decrees. It happened thus: Twenty-year-old Mary Ambrose Smith, daughter of J. Sheppard Smith, president of the Mississippi Valiey Trust Co., was chosen queen s year. At the ball in the Coli- seum in early October she was crowned in a gorgeous ceremony. The prophet requires that his queen be unmarried and remain so But a few days after the ball it was loarned that Miss Smith, two months before her coronation, had secretly wed Dr. Thomas C. Birdsall. Miss Smith and Dr. Birdsall im- mediately left the city on a belated honeymoon. Now they have re- turned and the following statement has been issued in behalf of the Veiled Prophet: “The Veiled Prophet Queen of 1928 has returned the trown, thus abdicating. The throne is declared vacant.” “Yes,” says the deposed queen, “T had the family send in the crown with my abdication shortly after we left on the honeymoon. Of course, I regret very much I was the cause of breaking a precedent of many years.” “You were in quite a predicament on the eve of the Veiled Prophet's ball, weren’t you?” she was asked. “Yes, and I was worried quite a bit before, as soon as I learned I was to be chosen queen, I didn’t know what to do, so I didn’t do any- thing. But now that it is all over and everyone apparently has had drowning men that clutch at straws. Raskob Answers “If Mr. Raskob’s ethical sense is 60 fine and his general sensibilities 60 readily aroused it might be worth while to ask how it happens that he has my mail. Did he himself rifle the mails or did some of his Tam- many stool pigeons do it for him?” Mr. Raskob, commenting on Sen- ator Moses’ statement, said: “My reputation is too well estab- lished to be injured by a man like Senator Moses charging me with as the United States mails or alling me names. His statement is No answer to my letter to the chair- man of the Republican national com- mittee who is the man I think all the people hold responsible for the proper conduct of the Republican campaign.” Set Rules Are Given for Corn Selection , Care should be exercised in select- rn exhibits for the state show to a pamphlet issued by P. stant agronomist at ta experiment sta- G. Pick ears far enough in advance of the show so that they may be thoroughly dried before showing. Avoid ears showing frost, blister- , or other damage. Avoid ears showing any sign of mold, | Avoid ears with stringiness or dis- coloration in butt of cobs; these are evidences of disease. Avoid ears whose kernels are dull or lusterless, or show an undue amount of starchiness in the sides of kernels. The dent is always duller than the sides, because the starch shows through at this point. This is as it should be. Choose ears that are true to the variety which they represent. Choose symmetrical, well-shaped ears with straight rows of kernels extending well over the butt and tip. ears are very scarce, but ap- Proach them as nearly as possible.
