Less than & month now remains in ‘which to complete the transfer under the terms Of the free bridge actof the 21st of June. Should any unforeseen hiteh occur in the proceedings nothing but the interposition of Congress with amendatory legislation will save the bargain. Allthe bad featares of this long postpone- ment of the inevitable do not consist, however, in the risk incurred. If the strong desire of the people of this District and of Alexandria county, Va., had been heeded, the transfer might have taken place last spring, and by this time the work would have been so well under ‘Wuy that the opening of another active haul- Ang season would have found the renovated Structure ready for use. As itis, travel has been repeatedly interrupted for patch-work repairs. For some weeks, owing to the vigi- lance of the District authorities, the bridge has been continuously closed, and to nobody’s profit. The government was unable to go ahead with its work because the title had not yet been conveyed to It, while the owners could hot get an income from the regular traffic oe- cause the Commissioners had forbidden the use of an unsafe bridge. For the great incon- ‘venience caused by this stoppage of business, ‘and for the waste of time, the public may di- vide their thanks between the lessees and the canal company.
