iG ae NOVEMBER 23, 1886—SUPPLEMENT. oF WITH THE FAIK FORGER. The trialof Miss Jennie Sexton for forging the name of John L. Mason to two orders for $500 and $500 respectively, was begun In Bur- lington, Vt, Saturday. Miss Sexton and Mr. Mason were both in court. C.F. Ward, treas- urer of the Burlington Savings bank, was the first witness and testified rggarding the trans action at the bank. Mr. Mason testified that he was 66 years old. He called himself a farmer, although he specu- lated and was interested in mang other entel prises. His residence was in Kickinond, a shor distance from that of Mr. father Of the accused. He never signed the orders shown him, and never authorized Jennie or any one else"to do so. On crossexainination by Mr. Bullard he said he had been acquainted with the accused since she was two or three years old. He thought she was now twenty or iwen- ty-one. He bad met her often in Richmond and inthis city. He trequently rode ou cars with her. He was very fond of apples, and gave them to oth the never banded Jennie an apple with $i50. He often gave ‘her fruit, though. He had many letters from her, but kept only sixorseven. He had one with’ him ‘at the court and showed it to counsel, but it was not put in evidence. She started to close the door, when he stepped In front of her and stood in the doorway, saying be did not want a scene. He was sorry, but he could not help her, and bade her good day. The hearing was then adjourned till Monday at 9a. m. Subsequent to the hearing it was learned that the letter given by Mason to the counsel of the accused was addressed by her to Mason, stating that she was in troubie and that young nan was to blame. He was poor, aud it’ Mason would lend her money she would pay ‘him large interest. JENNIE’S LETTERS TO MASON. ‘The case was resumed in Burlington, Vt, yesterday. fon. Garrett, a young lawyer, having an office in the Stewart building and residing at No. 473 West 21st street, was arrested yester- day on a charge of the larceny of $11,400 from Mrs, Rosalie Charpentier, a French widow, who, upon the death of her husband, continued bis bakery business at No. 160 West 24th Street. She wus reputed wealthy,and had a son and daughter, the latter a rather pretty girl of 20 years. Mrs. Charpentier says that Garrett was a friend of the family for years, and had paid assiduous court to her daughter, ‘uuutil between them there was a tacit engage ment of marriage. In August, 1885, Mrs. Char- pentler says that, being anzious to purchase the property adjoining her house, she put in Garrett's hands the settlement of all claims against the property. He reported that Mrs. Catherine A. Fieids, of Brooklyn; Mary C. Pear- sall, of East Hinsdale, Long Isiand; An \stasia and Peter Reese, of this city, and a flith living in San Francisco, would all give quit ciaims for $3,000 eac! On August 17, 1855, she says that In the presence of her daughter, Eugenie, she gave him $12,000, and later the Temainder. He failed to give her a receipt, aad, when asked for it, said he had a war- Fanty deed, which he kept. He was released upon giving $10,000 bail for examination. Esther Rockwell's Romance. HER MEETING WITH A ROVING HUSBAND WHOM SHE HAD LONG THOUGHT DEAD. A telegram from New Haven, Nov. 20, says: Mrs. Esther Niles Kockwet!, widow of Harry Rockwell, died at Haddam Neck a few days ago. A most romantic event in her life gave her something more than mere local repute. She was married in 1817 to Harry Rockwell, who lived further up the Connecticut riyer, and. Who Was @ man of somewhat roving disposition, with a strong liking for the Two Years after marriage Rockwell epted an offer for winter employment’ in Savannah, but when he returned in the spring came only to New York. There he Was tempted to sbip on # whaler, and did so without seeing his wife. He was aiterward captured while on an Englisn vessel by & Spanish ship, and spent two or three years in a Spanish prison. Then, without returning home, he enlisted in the U.S. navy, and ior some years alter was on a merchant’ ship. He sailed around the world several times. Mrs. Rock- well, not having heard anything from him tor seven or eight years, believed he was dead, aud tm 1825 she married George Evans, who died in Isl. Bock well in that year was in New York, and intended to return home, Lut bearing tuat bis wife had married again, thinking him dead, he at once shipped for « long voyage. By Mr. Evans the wife had three children, two of whom sre now living.
