Those wishing to bring their announcements to the notice of the public during the week, will please bear in mind that ax Thursday is a legal holiday THe STAL will not be issued that afternoon. Ad- vantage should therefore be taken of tomorrow's paper by advertisers wishing to avoid the effects of tis hiatus, —<—<—« __ At last, after months of needless delay, the Aqueduct bridge proprietors have reached the point which they were bound to come tosooner or later, and agreed to perfect title and convey the bridge to the government of the United States. Less than & month now remains in ‘which to complete the transfer under the terms Of the free bridge actof the 21st of June. Should any unforeseen hiteh occur in the proceedings nothing but the interposition of Congress with amendatory legislation will save the bargain. Allthe bad featares of this long postpone- ment of the inevitable do not consist, however, in the risk incurred. If the strong desire of the people of this District and of Alexandria county, Va., had been heeded, the transfer might have taken place last spring, and by this time the work would have been so well under ‘Wuy that the opening of another active haul- Ang season would have found the renovated Structure ready for use. As itis, travel has been repeatedly interrupted for patch-work repairs. For some weeks, owing to the vigi- lance of the District authorities, the bridge has been continuously closed, and to nobody’s profit. The government was unable to go ahead with its work because the title had not yet been conveyed to It, while the owners could hot get an income from the regular traffic oe- cause the Commissioners had forbidden the use of an unsafe bridge. For the great incon- ‘venience caused by this stoppage of business, ‘and for the waste of time, the public may di- vide their thanks between the lessees and the canal company. The lessees seem to have been anxious to hold onto the last penny of tolls ‘they couid squeeze out of their patrons, pro- Vided they could not defeat the new bridge project altogether; and the canai people hemmed and hawed, and nosed about insearch of some means of getting a sare of the pur- ehase money. The advantage ot a dog-in-the manger policy, when it is sure to be unsuccess- ful, must be left to somebody else to find out; it ‘will suffice the peopie most interested to know that, after all their tedious waiting, the object they have sought is within sight, _——<——— Senator Edmunds must find time hanging heavy on his hands if he can afford togive so much of it to the preparation of speeches ar- raigning the administration for alleged viola- tions of the civil service law. With a large majority of the business men of the country calling for # new bankruptcy law, with the sil- ‘Ver question, the labor question, the tariff ques— ‘ton, and a number of others of like importance, still unsettled, it seems as it there were enough Problems to occupy the mind even of agreat ‘statesman in the serene atmosphere of the upper house of Congress without “playing to the galleries,” as the theatrical folk term it. ‘The frivolous wind-up of last spring’s wrestling- match over the Duskin resolutions ought to be ® warning to the Senators generally that they ‘were not sent to Washington for show purposes. ————— Henry George may not strictly have sowed ‘the wind, but he let enough wind-seeds slip be- ‘tween bis fingers to raise quite a little crop of whirlwind, nevertheless. His defeat for the mayoraity was attributed by some of his best friends to the way he let the socialists run his campaign for him; and now the socialists are cursing him as. hypocrite and au ingrate, be- cause he accepted their help through the can- ‘Vass and repudiated them aiterward. The ‘obvious moral is that positive qualities win respect in politics as everywhere else. When a man is known for what he is,and makes no attempt at masquerading, even his enemies feel willing to trust him; but the opposite traits cost him the confidence even of those who would Like to be his friends. —— oe Itissincerely tobe hoped that the reports ‘which have reached this city reflecting upon the conduct of Judge Manning are not only groundless, but that they had their origin this Side of the Mexican boundary. Whatever may have been the merits of the Sedgwick incident, ‘the fact that there were many honest persons im Mexico who believed the worst stories told about it was most unfortunate for the good name of our country. It would be the last straw on the camel's back to have a greater scandal follow a lesser within the space of three months. —<—<—<$<— = ___ If crank Shuler, of Rondout, N. Y., continues totoliow the President about, petitioning for office in one piace and running after him to assure him of his good will in another, he will have to be posted as a public nuisance. ——<———— The American porker discredited in Ger- many and France, and American poker in Austria!
