aN een ee 4 ¥ GIVING way, to tears momentarily, Ethel Barrymore seemed to feel more than she could perhaps convey to her audience at the Long- acre Theatre last night, when she It was word of Romeo's banishment © kins's production, designed by Robert that brought these tears and left no doubt of 4 genuine sense of grief. Yet this was not the highest point of Miss Barrymore's performance She rose to the potion scene with more power than she displayed at any other time. Here she gave ber imagination way, and the horrors of the tomb were in her eyes and her voice. This was so finely done that the house found it- self held briefly in the spell of dreaded tragedy. At other times Miss Barrymore was subdued and mature Juliet of little or no warmth. Repression seemed to be the watchword of Arthur Hop- Ed ste: str eur thi to Handel’s “Messiah” * Large Audience to Car- negie Hall. By Frank H. Warren. If Christmas comes can “The Mes- siah” be far behind? One would infer not when it is remembered that this best known piece of Christmas ora- torio music was sung in New York for the first time in 1771 and that the} Oratorio Society itself last evening in Carnegie Hall gave its ninety-seventh performance of the Handel work. The general interest in the occasion was shown first by the large attendance, the management having to get out the “Standing Room Only” eign; ondly, by the fact that a goodly pro- portion of the audience followed the music from scores and many patrs of lps were observed silent!y saying the words with the singers. Probably many in the audience had once been numbered in the society’s chorus and were present as loyal members of the y' oO B sec- THE NEW PLAYS Ethel Barrymore a Subdued, Mature Juliet . To be sure, there was the never-failing radiance of face and eyes and hair, yet it had p, @ calmness that, left romance without single throb. The looked-for joy of Juliet was missing. This, per- haps, proved the greatest disappoint- ment. Restraint could be felt in nearly every mood, as though a rule had been made te be followed at any cost More than once Miss Barry- more seemed on the point of breaking this restraint, as she so easily could have done, only to force herself along passive lines in which she seemed ill at ease. Whatever the plan may have been, it did not make for success. The general lifelessness of the per- formance necessarily seemed strange- ly foreign to the characters. An ap- parent attempt at ease resulted only in slowness of speech and action. A colloquial reading of the Queen Mab speech, for example, caused natural wonder at the Mercutio of Basil Syd- ney, but having concluded this recita- tion lamely, he took a turn for the better by putting something of the required high spirits into his role and so came off by far the best of the men. McKay Morris was matter-of-fact rather than poetic as Romeo, with neither fervor nor graces to suit the lover. Hopelessly unromantic, he grew worse still with noise toward the end. Charlotte Granville contented herself with being merely serviceable as the Nurse, and Russ Whytal seemed a nice elderly gentleman doing duty as Friar Laurence with nothing in the world that resembled a cell In a sense, Misa Barrymore has readized her ambition. But as she now plays it, Jullet cannot possibly be considered one of her pe MAG seo CALLE tata lind roles. After Divorce. In an action brought in the Supreme Court by Mrs. Bird Shoemaker Laumier, against her divorced husband, Merman 1. Laumier of St. Louls, to compel ‘him | to support their son, Justice Mullan has! decided that Mrs. Laumier must, a preliminary step, obtain a modification of the decree of the Missourf Court which granted the divorce and whicn included a statement that no children were born of the marriage. Ratford Alley, attorney for Mrs, Lau- mier, points out that an injustice was done his client and her child by the pub- lished reports of Justi Mullan’s de- cision, which made it appear that the Missouri courts had held the child to be illegitimate. “As u matter of fact,” sald Mr. Alley, “there has never been offered anywhere a scintilla of evidence that the child was illegitimate.
