BY RECOGNITION OF HS LIFE WORK Poundation and F and Prelecture- ship to Be Launched To- Morrow Night, ‘The life work of a man to make New York the most patriotic and best Informed city in the world will be given recognition to-morrow night at Town Hail when the Henry M. Leip- ziger Foundation {s, launched. Dit Leipziger left his impress on both the adult and younger generation, and the appropriation of $10,000 from his estate will perpetuate his influence throitgh an endowed lectureship free |= to all. The fund is administered by the League for Political Education with Judge Samuel Gi |» Henry W. Taft and Robert E. as the com- mittee in charge. The first lecture, by, James M. Beck, Solicitor General on “The Lost Sense of Values," wil| likewiso celebrate tno sixty-elghth anniversary of Dr. Leipziger’s birth in Manchester, England. Mr. Taft will preside and briefly outline Dr. Leipziger's career. Representatives of the City College, from which he was graduated in the class of 1878 with the degrees of B.S. and B.A. and men and women of prominence will be present Leipziger, who was an LL. D. and Ph. D of Columbia and an LL. D. of Union University, eame to this country as an immigrant in early youth and received his education tn the public schools. He qualified as a lawyer, supporting himself during his law course at Columbia by teaching night school. “After a brief period he relinquished his practice to become a teacher, but after six years his health failed and for two years he travelled and rested. In 1884, with the help of co-religionists, he founded the He- brew Technical Institute, becoming the Superiniendent, and remaining till 1891, whe: ss brought him the position of Assistant Superinten- dent of Schools. In this position he found means to launch his ‘University of the Peo- ple"? through the free lectures in the public schools, which had been suggested and strongly advocated by The Evening. World. Lectures were opened in 1899 in six schools and in Mhree months an attendance of 22,000 testified to his popularity. The major- {ty of those who came were middle: aged. By 1900 there was an army of lecturers and a half million attend- ance, and before Leipziger's death in September, 1917, the attendance has passed the million mars. Dr. Leipziger never married. His sister, Miss Pauline Lcipziger, and his brother, Nathaniel S. Leipziger, promoted the lectureship in his mem ory. Only one lecture, that of the Solicitor General, is projected at pres- ent. This will be printed and circu- lated through libraries, newspapers, magazines and other sources. FOURTEENTH Begin the New Year With a New Suit Men’s suits. plain colors.
