coamaslimsia The Sash Takes Its Place as Part of the Smart Costume Instead of Be- ing an Added Bit. Contrasting Colors Result in Most Charming Sash Developments of the Midsummer Dress. ® By Mildred Lodewick. TDSUMMER days are spent mostly in efforts to keep cool, with sheer frocks and sun- hades to help. All that {s most ir- Tesistibly feminine about one is ac- centuated by summer attire. The allurement of delicate la of flutter- ing ribbons, gay colors and styles so informal yet smart cannot be dupli- @ated in any other season. Bashes are popular, but not in the @ld-fashioned way. They have as- sumed a more legitimate part of the frocks they accompany because their Jong ends either fall in with the @rapery or panels of the dress or werve to lend the atmosphere of float- fg panels to a plain skirted frock. Tm fact, the sash Is ofttimes em- joyed as an easy means of lending @ last year’s frock a dash of this year's favorite spice. For almost every Gress one sees is dripping with long, floating draperies of some sort or other. Tt ts a feature that ts aiding exten- @ively the adoption of the longer skirt. But to return to sashes. They are Mot always of ribbon and never of crisp ribbon. On the contrary, the @oftest possible textures are sought, @ven novelty ribbons having been made up this season cially for the Purpose. These have a foundation of Seorgette with stripes or figures of @atin, or are of a soft, loosely woven Satin texture in two tones with pebbly Surfaces. Quite the prettiest ribbon for the modish sash, however, ts the satin which is double faced, with the two sides of contrasting colors. En- twined about the waistline twice in- @tead of once, an exquisite mingling of the two colors is most gracefully done, and at the side, as pictured in my sketch, a band of roses may serve instead of a knot. Pale blue on one side and orchid on the other ts a Pretty combination, which with pink Toses would go well with almost any color frock of light hue Another Individual sash may be achieved through the alliance of three colors of chiffon, such as maize. light blue, and pale rose, in long strips whipped together. Twenty inches should be the width of such @ sash, which would be an adorable ‘accompaniment to # lace frock, or & simple pale colored taffeta one. Now all that has Breer remedied. “Let's stop at Nanking,” said Alice, “that's somewhere on the Yangtze. nd we'll see the Porcelain Towe: “What's the Porcelain Tower? Jamie wanted to know. They found that {t was one of the wonder build. ings of China: an eight-sided tower of white porcelain bricks decorated with nine overhanging eaves, green in color and a gilt ball at the top. Five large pearls were hung from the roof on chains. The pearls each had a mis- sion. One was supposed to keep away floods, another fires, the third dust wtorms; the fourth high tempests, and the fifth was to guard the city against isturbunces. The tower had 1653 sweet-sounding bells and many more beautiful lanterns. All this made the children eager to see the tower, which the Emperor Yung-lo had erected in large Our longer,” 1418 to honor the virtues of his mother. But when they reached Nanking Allee and Jamie and their party found dropping a loop and long end on each side. Sash ends are never short but 8 long that at least one of them Out-reaches the skirt edge. I have noted many novel exploita- tions in summer frocks at the various resorts. An otherwise conservative frock, for instance, will make some radical departures such as an exag- gerated Puritan collar dropping that (he Porcelain Lower hud been de- stroyed, and indeed, that nothing was left of the ancient relics but the tombs of Ming kings. “What queer lace to carry a pipe,” laughed Alc “Did you seo that man who just pased us?" she asked Jamie. “He had a fan in his hand and a pipe in his boot., Jamie THE EVE NING WORLD, SATURDAY, AUGUST 12, 1922. Feathers, Net and Straw Are Favorite Materials, but They Must Match the Slippers and Stock- ings Worn for Evening. By Ruth Snyder. UMMER time was made for fun, S as every young girl and boy knows, In the summer we love to dance even more than in the win- ter, And what could be more appeal- ing to the summer girl, the dancing girl, the luxury loving girl, than some of the wonderful fans which are now being displayed? There are fans and fans. They are large and small. For the dainty girl who merely wishes a suggestion of a fan there are the usual fans which may be folded compactly and then opened Into the typical ‘fan shaped’? design. They may be purchased at a very reasonable figure. ‘As we all know, some of the larger fane—in fact, the most appealing fem- inine fane—are rather out of range of the ordinary pocketbook. They are luxuries for most of us, But I will tell you what one girl did in an effort to have a pretty ostrich fan. She bought a single ostrich plume, un- curled, and a holder and made a fan for herself. ‘These single plume fans are quite in vogue, you know. The fans shown on this page ire beautiful, are they not?
