But even when the sport hat is not the thing that can be worn in tewn it is still a necessary adjunct to one’s wardrobe, for aren't we con- tinually taking trips where we need the added bit of unconventionality that the informal hat alone can give? The beauty about the sport hat is that it can be pulled about one's face in any way that makes it becoming for the time being. An American hat designer was heard to bewail the hat state of the American girls in general. He said: “They have lost all sense of line and beauty in their hats. miy shop by the dozens and demand ‘a little round hat that pulls down about the face.’'’ Well, of course, his fears were a little previous and unfounded, but he knew whereof he spoke when he told of the untversal desire for the little, close and tight- fitting hats. HEN buying the first hats for in that expression, the designer is never going to be able to drag her from the wearing of sport hats—not while she loves comfort and ease as much as she does right now. Peasant embroideries are all the rage for dresses, and of course they have worked their way into the realm of hats. In that position they are even more charming than they are in any other, for the brightness of their colors is given ample opportunity to show to its full advantage. In the picture on this page you will see one that is done in an all-over pattern of peasant work on a taffeta foundation and then the whole is draped around the head so that it makes the most becoming sort of a head covering. Another hat in the picture is made of a combination of yellow straw and blue beads. The straw is sewn together in what the milliners call ‘in the hand,"’ so that it asaumes a soft- ness of shaping that enables it to be adjusted to your own special head in & manner that is always satisfying. The blue beads are merely little slen- der tubes of wood that are placed in rows around the brim to give a certain relief to the all-overness of the yellow aga § ~} -} igainst tos Fac The habit of using narrow ribbons for sport hats is one that has taken a firm hold upon those who love to wear this sort of hat. The ribbon is held together nearly always in some decorative way, as is shown by the hat on this page, which consists of a combination of rows of white ribbon held together by red faggoting stitches. There are many ways of elaborating this idea, and the milll- ners have gone into the expression most decidedly for this spring season. So if you want a ribbon hat, there is no reason on earth why you should not have it, for at any rate you have all the rules of smartness on your side of the argument The taffeta hat, which is not s0 markedly of sport character, but which strikes the ways of a happy medium, is one of the popular ones of the season, It is more apt to be made with a brim that is slightly stif- fened but still smal] enough to place the hat in a class with those which are ealled distinctly comfortable. There is one of these shown on this page, and it being made of # light, faint shade of silk, is then embroid- ered with clever woollen flowers to make a decoration on the forepurt of the softly draped crown These hats are done in all colors and they are particularly suitable for wear with the tweed and homespun suits which have taken such a hold upon the feminine population It is not always eusy to suit the hat tu the thick, tweed suit, but it can be done, and this is one of the ways to accom. plish the feat. Sut there is just one warning to be put forward in connection with the wearing of sport hats Keep them in their proper place, Do not wear them Peasant embroider: In bright colors covers ' thi port ut of silk th ri he ) i 1 t bit dressy, for if you du this you not only succeed in spoiling the character oc the hat but you ruin the impres- sion thut your o her clothes should make Sport hats are for plain clothes only, and us long as you keep them fast in this class, then you will like the effect that you are able to sead out into the world at large.
