SS The Byways of Fashion EASTER LOOMS AHEAD AND EVERY WOMAN PLANS SOME REVISION FOR HER WARDROBE a Hat Trimming and Scarf Are Formed by a Heavy Mesh Veil. By Margery Wells. Cc ght, 1922 (The New York Evening patty th by the Press Publishing Co. UT of her hiding place behind furs and winter scarfs comes the head of the American girl booking pleasantly about for Spring and her own Easter bonnet. A thrill lies in wait for you all this season, for you are to be allowed more color than for many springs gone by. For your hats and for your clothes there must be plenty of color, plenty of zip, plenty of happy spirit. Out of the mass of new things lit- tle garden spots of particular charm and beauty are lifting their heads and these I ferret out to tell about on this page of the fine points of fashion. If your new things must be merely fine points, well and good, have them the finest in the world, not necessarily the most expensive. And, if you_are plan- ning a whole new wardrobe then, par- ticularly, do not neglect the little things which will make it perfect. Veiled Against High Winds. Wound ‘round the head and shoul- ders are the new veils made of chif- fon and lace. Three different and quite distinct examples of them are seen in the pictures on this page. Every line, every fold, every film about them is picturesque—something to add charm to the set of the head and the tilt of the face. And, for the first spring days there is nothing like a wrapping veil to keep the hair in place and the face from roughening. This little practical hint goes along with the becoming quality of the veil that is chosen to suit your face and to make it look its best. A veil of openwork net is edged with a side band of chiffon, and both of these are tinted a creamy shade of tan. Turned back over the brim of the hat, a veil of this general vhar- acter gives a softness of oulllae «nat is flattering to every girl. fou may have prejudices uguinst dhe snduc burden of a wrappiag .ell, sut cry at just once and see aow your choughts will change their ways almost witn- out your perception. And this one im the picture is made all of white to carry out that tendency for which the season is noted—the dressing in white for many occasions. With a dressy afternoon frock or with white woollen suit, a veil of this sort would be immensely becoming, and for the girl who likes to dress in this purity of tone there could be nothing love- lier, Sleeveless Coat Over Pleats. There are many ways of beautify- ing the sleeveless coat. One of them is by applying embroidery, as it is done in the photograph reproduced on this page. The coat is of a soft green Jersey cloth and the embroidery is done in all those brilliant shades of wool which go so well with that ma- terial. Then the accordion pleating over which the jacket is worn is something quite new in the way of an under- dress. You can see at once that it has a value which you might not have imagined. The softness of the way in which the pleats fall together is becoming in the extreme and the lohg sleeves that are tied snugly about the waists are wonderfully flattering to any one whose hands are the least bit petite. Sleeveless coats are worn with quite tailored waists and sport skirts either pleated or plain. They are worn too with one-piece dresses especially de- signed to go with them. They are in fact useful adjuncts to the spring and summer costume, making it take on a different aspect and at the same time adding just a wraith of warmth when the chill of the day demands a bit of extra covering. Bright Ribbon for Bindings. It is the fashion now to do without hems as much as possible, and one of the ways of doing away with the hem is to place a bright ribbon along the edge. Many of the newer dresses are not only bound with ribbon along the neckline and the sleeve edges, but you will see that little glint of a colored ribbon appearing again at the bottom of the skirt. Of course this substitute for a hem imposes certain responsibilities upon the dress in the way of keeping its hang intact. But once that little matter has been satisfactorily attend- ed to, then the ribbon at that poing is a wonderful thing. On the new blue serge dress made for every-day wear there are apt to be bindings of a bright, Irish green. And even though the ribbon shows not more than an eighth of an inch of its color, it shines forth most bril- liantly because it is so cleverly and 60 artistically placed. A ribbon neckline of cerise on a black dress was ended at the centre of the back with long streaming ends of the ribbon that ended only after they had passed the waistline, Shawl Cape Still Good.
