WASHINGTON, ‘March &—Re- cently, Prohibition Commissioner Haynes joyfully announced drunkards bave entirely disappeared from the Gtreeta of New York City. The Board of Temperance, Prohibi- tion and Public Morals of the Metho- dist Dpiscopal Church made public to- day statistics on arrests in New York City, prepared by Robert E. Corradini of the Anti-Saloon League, showing in 1921 there were 6,247 ar- @rests tor intoxication in the metrop- olis, ‘ But an even more forceful exposure of the fact that Commissioner Haynes id not speak from accurate informa- tion is disclosed by the fact that, ac- ) cording to Mr. Corradini, there was an increase of nearly, 1,000 in the number of arrests for drunkenness it year as compared with 1920, and ‘only a slight reduction from 1918, the / ‘ast year of open saloons. / Mr. Corradini has statistics for twenty-four of the larger cities in New York State. Every one of those over 15,000 inhabitants shows an in- crease in the number arrested for be- ing drunk in 1921 as compared with 1920 and in many cases a great in- crease over 1918. The figures, with the number of arrests in 1920 given first, are: Albany, 1920, 417, 1921, 627; Bing- ° ‘ THE EVENING WORLD, WEDNESDAY, MAROH 8, e DRUNKENNESS GROWS IN N.
