DEATHS INCITS STREETS I 192 Pleasure Cars Kill 534, Includ- ing 402 Children + Sui- cides and Homicides, 1,147. aa Under the heading “Highway Acci- dents” the report of the Medical Ex- aminer for 1921, issued yesterday, listed 1,081 deaths in the City of New York, Of these 402 were ‘children r under the age of thirteen. Suicides and homicides exceed deaths by highway accidents only by 66. An increase of 121 deaths over 1920 is recorded. The pleasure car caused 531 deaths. Commercial automobiles were next with 256 deaths, and responsibility for the remaining 168 deaths in this clagsification is split between horse- drawn wagons, street cars, elevated, 8 \ subway and railway trains, motor- \ cycles and bicycles. Suicides, the report shows, 1n- creased 133 over 1920, when the total was 707, In 1921 two of those who took their own lives were under fit- teen, Gas is still the most used method of suicides, leading the list with 291, while shooting ranks next, with 151, and jumping from heights third, with 142, Three hundred married men com- mitted suicide, 180 unmarried men took their own lives. Similarly 115 married women and sixty-seven single ones were suicides. Homicides show a -decrease, with 307 last year to 344 the year pre- = vious. Shooting was the popular method of taking life, the report shows, 206 deaths by bullets being recorded. Falls claimed 675 lives, twelve fa- tilities being from falls from beds ‘and one from a bathtub. Burns caused the deaths of 403 persons, six of whom were killed by the explosion of stills The total number of deaths coming to the attention of the Medical aminers’ office during 1921 was 10, which by boroughs are as follow Manhattan, 5,586; Brooklyn, 3,023; Bronx, 967; Queens, 701, and Rich- mond, 252.
