STAMELENLEN QUIT COLD, TENNIS OFFICIAL AFFIRMS Treasurer of U. S, Association Says Capt. de Joannis Has Not Told the Half. PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 28.—"Ev- erything Capt. de Joannis said in re- gard to the actions of Suzanne Lengien during her visit to America ts correct,” declared Joseph M. Jen- nings, Treasurer of the United States ‘Lawn Tennis Association, in a state- ment made public to-day. “Capt. de Joannis did not say half that could te said,” he continued. “Mile. Leuglen suffered no physical wvllapse while here. In her first match against Mrs. Molla Bjurstedt Mallory I talked with her myself just before she went on the courts. We ‘were particular to inquire regarding her health. She had been prancing about in high spirits. There was not a trace of a cough. She assured me she never felt better in her life. ‘ “Then, as she saw she .was facing defeat, the coughing appeared when- ever she lost a point, and in face of defeat she just plain quit. In the evening she danced for several hours. “The next day she came to me and apologized. She quit cold on every engagement. We kept track of her and found she continually displayed great activity and strength except when called upon to play tennis, “Probably the worst of her evasions came at the opening of the Davis Cup play. On the second day of the tour- nament, when a great crowd Was ex- pected, Mile, Lenglen agreed to take part in an exhibition match, We warned her that she must give her solemn promise to play, and she gave her word repeatedly. Shortly before playing time she suddenly announced another collapse. We had her watched and that afternoon she started danc- ing at 5 o'clock and continued untit midnight. “When a member of our organiza- tion asked her directly how she could dance when too ill to play tennis, she replied: ‘Oh, it's because I love to dance, It'y more exciting.’ “That ended her for our organtza- tion, and all players sufficiently close to the leaders know of the facts. Capt. de Johannis war aimost in de- spair.” f ‘William T. Tilden 2d, world’s cham- pion tennis player, said he had talked with Miss Lenglen before the two matches in which she appeared to collapse and that apparently she was in the best of physical condition, pa PARIS TENNIS CHIEF RESIGNS IN CHAGRIN OVER MLLE.LENGLEN Capt. de Joannes, Who Brought Her Here, Protests Censure of Americans. PARIS, Nov. 28 (Associated Press). —Capt. Albert R. de Joannis, who accompanied Mile. Suzanne Lenglen, the French tennis player, to the United States last summer, hes tendered his resignation as Vice President of the French Tennis Fed- eration and also as a member of the organization. _M. de Joannis resigned in protest against the federation’s “order of the day,” blaming the directors of the “United States Lawn Tennis Associa- tion for unjustified commentaries upon the sporting spirit of Milo. Lenglen.” “Mile. Lenglen, sald M. de Joannis “was perfectly fit when she met Mrs, Molla Bjurstedt Mallory at Forest Hills. Mile. Lenglen was de- feated by a player who on that date showed a better brand of tennis, “Suzanne's attacks against the United States lawn tennis officials and the public are absolutely unwar- ranted. She was received like a ilttle Queen and treated with the utmost courtesy. Her every whim and mood wae satisfied. . ‘ “She knows how to win, but she does not know how to lose gracefully. She placed the personality of Suzanne before the good name of the sporting world of her country, and could not face defeat. “The attitude of the United States lawn tennis officials and of the Ameri- can public in the face of the repeated acfaults of Mile. Lenglen was very lenient and above wil blame.” B. Altman & Gn.
