MRS, LEEDS” NURSE ~ MAY TESTIFY FOR NS. STLNAN Woman's Services in Divorce Fight Said to Have Been Offered to Brennan. ‘The proffer of a new witness in the Plea for absolute divorce, custody of afer children and alimony of approxi- mately $7,500 monthly, wnich is the @nnounced intention of Mrs, Anne Urquhart Stillman, was made to-day to John F, Brennan, her chief counsel. ‘This witness, whose name is not dis- closed, was a nurse to Mrs. Florence ‘Leeds late in the autumn of 1919, sub- sequent to the birth of her child, Jay Ward Leeds, and remained in her ser- vice for some time, It was eaid that the proffer of her services in behalf of Mre, Stillman was made by a “New York business man," who wrote to Mr. Brennan about it, Mr, Brennan was reported to-day to have made ar- rangements to obtain the testimony of this woman, Mrs. Stillman’s decision to ask for the absolute divorce in a further amended answer was made this week @fter several conferences of her sounsel at Yonkers. She is said as a result of her personally directed fight against her husband's divorce action to feel confident that she can turn the tables on him and herself obtain a divorce. When Mr, Stillman filed his suit last summer Mrs, Stillman merely made a general denial of his charges. After the suit and its nature be- \yeame public this spring, she amended ‘her answer by entering an “affirma- tice defense,” naming Mrs, Florence Leeds, but not asking a divorce, She has unearthed so much evidence since, it is understood, and her law- yers are so sure they will have ex- punged or disprove most, if not all, the damaging testimony given against her, that she will now ask a divorce. According to rumor this tact has become known to Mr, Stillman's lawyers, and is one reason for a re- vival of the story a settlement was imminent. No statement was made as to whether Mrs. Stillman will add her amendment asking a divorce on next Tuesday, when the hearings are re- sumed, or after Mr. Stillman has com- pleted ‘his side of the case, _—$—<—————— Slayer of Friend Held Insane. CHICAGO, June %4.—A plot to re- store life to two criminals executed here to-day by rushing the bodies to a shop where warm blankets and pul- motors were to be used, was frustrated by Jailer Laurenz Melsterheim, who held the bodies in the jail for two hours after the execution, He sald a similar plot last winter almost suc- ceeded. ‘The two men, who were hanged for murder, were Grover Redding and Oscar McGavick. Meisterheim sald it would be possible to restore life if the men were merely strangled, but that if their necks were broken no effort would succeed. He declared that a spark of life was re- stored last December to Nick Bianca, who was hanged, but that the man died “a second time" within a few minutes, FUNDING TO WAIT ON TARIFF AND TAX In Spite of Presklent’s ‘Appeal Con- gress Will Delay Debt Collection, (Special to The Brening World.) WASHINGTON, June 24.—Action of the Ways and Means and Finance Committees of Congress on the Presi- dent's request through Secretary Mellon for legistation loo’cing to collection of the Allied debt will be delayed while Congreas is writing tariff and tax legislation. ‘The Administration has shifted the burden. of collecting the debt upon Congress and at the same time subjected leaders at the Capitol to the direct criticism of the country for delay in collecting the debt. The Middle West in the last few weeks hes criticised the President for his “failure’* to collect the indebtedness and to effect other changes promised during the campaign, Undoubtedly these criticisms were laid before the President and prompted him to seek aid from Congress.
