Cox himself. Of course, the Republicans on the| Senatorial Committee are in the ma- jority, but in an investigation it is the publicity that counts, the leading (questions asked and answered on the stand and the implications of testi- mony. The Republicans felt that| they could easily show the baseless- ness of the charge that an effort had heen made to purchase the office of Chief Executive and they rested thelr ease entirely on the thought that, | even if thelr plans called for larger | quotas than had previously been spent, it still was necessary for the Democrats to prove that any of the sums raised had been epent or would be spent Illegitimately. | In New York, for instance, the writer encountered many Republi who were not disposed to grow ex- cited over the Cox charges. Is in MARION, ©., Aug. 30.—Plans for some of the speaking trips to be made by Senator Harding are nearing com- pletion, and announcement probably will be made soon of three or four places outside Ohio where he will deliver addresses. New York and Chicago are under- stood to be virtually certain to be on the list and the claims of a number of cities in the Middie West and West are being considered. Denver, Salt Lake City and Spokane mark the western part of the swing around the circle as is now discussed. The nominee has been strongly urged to go all the way to the Pacific Coast Indianapolis and Louisville are also being conaidered, and it has been suggested that the candidate speak at Philadelphia and Wheeling, but it is uncertain whether that plan will be carried out.
