NEW LAFAVETTE MAKES DEBUTAT ———ONWODORE \ Advanced Eight Eight. Cylinder | gine and Foreign Influence in — THRE EVENING WORLD, SATURDAY, bok ki t.5 8, 1920. Four of the High-Grade Touring Cars Well Known for Their Speed and “ Class’’, Body Design Are Features. American motordom will see the new LaFayette for the first time this afternoon. Coincident with the ral certain for the twentieth annual au- tomobile show at the Grand Central Palace, D. McCall White, interna- tionally famous as the designer of English Napier and Daimler and of the cight-cylinder Cadillac, presented his post-war car in the main lobby of the Hotel Commodore. Every detail of the LaFayette is of Mr. White's own design, and it is the intention of the company to build all units in its own plant. ‘The LaFayette is an eight of ad- vanced high speed design, the engines embodying many novel adaptations of principles. The V-shape motor is of the high- 1 type, with bore and stroke measurements of 3% by 5% Inches, giving a piston dis- placement of 348 cubic inches. The actual horse-power rating is in ex- cee: of 90, and the maximum engine speed, at which power is developed is 4,000 revolutions per minute. In addition to silent and flexible operation and the other inherent qualities of the eight, the LaFayette engine is distinguished by a capacity for tremendous car speeds. While five body styles are to be of- fered on the LaFayette chassis, which measures 132 inches from hub to hub, only one car—a touring sedan—is being showa at the Hotel Commodore. The LaFayette was designed pri- marily as a closed car in order that the coach builder would meet with ‘no limitations, automatically imposed chassis design, in the creation of closed bodies. ‘The wisdom of such a policy, which is totally at variance with common practice, has excellent exemplification in the LaFayette touring sedan. The low chassis, for example, per- mits of a body that has an overall height of only 77 inches, while the unusually long cowl, due to the com- pact design of the engine, allows for added body room. The LaFayette touring ‘sedan, in fact, gives an in- stant impression of co-ordinating di- Mensions and artistic balance. The c&r is so low, in fact, that the line * of visiow of a passenger is xpproxi- & mately that of a person of normal @tature walking along the street. ‘Yet the road clearance is ample. Galient style features are the high- rounding radiator, fitted with vertl- cal shutters that are regulated by thermostat and mechanically located the large headlamps of distinctive cylindrical design, rigidly mounted om a rod connecting the front fen- @ers; the long, high bonnet, with louvres running its entire jength; id the double-crowned fenders, WILT. BUILD MOST MODERN FACTORY. Fncipeera claim that the new estab- lishment of the Cadillac Motor Car Coin- pany of Detrojt will fully meet this description. From the standpoint of raftrand facitt- ties the site could not be surpassed.
