~ MASKED BURGLAR LOCKS ROOM AND BEATS WOMAN Mérgaret Morrissey, I Maid, Held Following Attack on Mrs. Louise Schoengood. Mrs. Louise Schoengood, wife of Charles Schoengood, United States Auctioneer for the District of New ‘York, awoke soon after 5 o'clock this morning in her apartment at No. 140 ‘West 8th Street to find a masked Wurgiar standing over her, A tweed Fedora hat was pulled down over the intruder’s eyes and the coat was but- ‘toned closely up at the chin. Mrs. Schoengood screamed and re- ceived a terrific blow in the face from a blunt instrument which stunned her. Her cry aroused her husband, who was sleeping in an ad- joining room. He sprang to the con- necting door only to find it locked from the other side. He pounded at it like a wild man, shouting at the game time and his cries frightened the intruder, who escaped through another door. ‘The victim of the attack, with blood streaming from her face, staggered from her’ bed and unlocked her hus- ‘band’s door. assailant in stepping over a bolster on the floor, made a movement iike @ woman to pick up her skirts, On the kitchen table lay a pair of woman's black gloves. As they were examining them there came to the kitchen door Iéading into the outer hall a vigorous knocking and upon opening the door, Murgaret Mor- rissey, a maid who had been employed for four weeks by Mrs, Schoengood, was discovered in the hall. By this time the house was in an uproar and the occupants were | swarming into the hall on the ninth floor where the Schoengoods live. Dr, Hlmer Lee, who lives in the house, She declared that her| ~ ne came from the West 47th Street Po- lice Station. They learned that Mr. and Mrs. Schoengood had reached ‘their rooms at midnight. Mrs, Schun- food had laid on her dresser a $10,000 pearl necklace and other valuable jewelry. None of this had been touched. In the hall detectives found a coat and tweed fedora hat belonging to ‘Mr. Schoengood. They discovered a black pin in the lapel of the coat which Margaret Morrissey admitted was hers, but couldn't account for its presence in the coat. ‘The woman, thirty-nine years old. lives at No. 105 Bast 88th Street, and was not supposed to reach the apart- ment until 9 o'clock in the morning. She told the detectives that her early visit was because she had left two fifty dollar notes in the apartment when she left last night, and was 90 worried over their safety she could not sleep and finally decided to go to the apartment. She admitted the black gloves found on the kitchen table were hers and said she had left them thers the night before. From the Schungoods the detectives learned that in her four weeks of service Mrs. Schungood had scolded Margaret on several oc- casions for not obeying ordera. On Election Day morning Mrs, Schungood had told her to go out and maké some purchases, but she didn’t go until the afternoon by which time tte stores were closed. Mrs. Schungvod had determined to replace her with another maid.
