Everybody enjoyed it except cer- |tain minions of the capitalistic press, who, invited to the party, were shooed off to the Press Table and, once seated, were waited upon by the ex-Ambassador who acts as the Bre- voort’s head waiter, The reporters strolled tm noncha- lently one by one. The conversation was usually something like this: Head Walter—You will have the dinnaire? Yes? No? Reporter—You can bet your life I'll have the dinnaire! Dinnaire is MY middle name, Duke, Me for the old feed bag. Oh, boy! Head Walter—Two dollars and a half. Reporter—Ie that so? Anarchists, eh? Two anda half! Some party! An hour and a half was wasted in eating and it was 9 by the clock when Leonard Abbott asked everybody to pull up the chairs, and stated that we were here to pay public tribute to two of the greatest and most ideal- istic fighters the Cause of Freedom has in all the world to-day. No idea, Brother Abbott said, was ever destroyed by force, by imprison- ment or by deportation. At a time of war hysteria, Emma and Alec stood true. Mr. Abbott read a telegram from Jacob Margolis of Pittsburg, the radical lawyer who braved a Senate Committee last week on behalf of the steel strikers, paying tribute to Miss Goldman and Mr, Berkman as “two of the greatest lovers of liberty in America.” HARRY KELLY, FULL OF PEP, WENT BIG. The next r was Comrade Harry Kelly, described as the “one man who the Ferrer School the Ferrer Colony.” Kel was full of pep and went big. There was hearty laughter when he recalled that in the old days, before the world got lit up —the dark old days—the motto down in Mulberry Street was “When in doubt, arrest Emma Goldman.” | Lola Ridge, who writes for the Modern School Magazine, organ of Ferrer fichool, read the beautiful poem she wrote to Mr. Berkman while a plutocratio Government had him in the pen at Atlan’ just for telling young men not to a wal- lop at the Kaiser, The began: “Can you see me down there?” There THE ONLY REAL PROOF That Our Prices Are Below Present Wholesale Cost §} Srring and mat- G extra. Mme. Krantz sang a song in Russian. ONLY THING FREE AT FEAST WAS SPEECH. At the head table with Emma and Alevy and Leonard D, Abbott and Harry Kelly and Lola Ridge sat Dr. Michael M. Cohen, Dr. A. L. Gold- water, Harry Weinberger, Alex Cohen, Anna M. Sloan, Rosa Tuster and Aline Barnsdale. Not all of those present were Reds or even pinks, for sitting at a table with the Gilbert Roes was Bolton Hall, whose “Three Acres and Liberty” has di- rected more than one family from the submerged subway to the high grass. Nearly everybody who spoke took a slam at Government (laughter), Secretary Baker, President Wilson, conscription, etc. The only thing free at the party was speech, and there was so much of that that the first milkman was banging his cans around Fifth Avenue at Eighth Street before either Comrade Goldman or Comrade ‘Berkman was introduced. Up to that hour ndbody had playfully tossed even a teeny-weeny little bomb. ANARCHISTS FEAR THE PHILIP- PINE ISLANDS. Both the prominent anarchists ex- pressed a willingness to be deported to Russia, and a fear that the United States may send them to prisons in the Philippines, Berkman called the Philippines the “American Siberia.” The revolution, he declared, “is on.” “The thing that shocked me most in prison,” Emma Goldman said, “was the ‘auto spiritual isolation.” Kate Richards O'Hare can sleep well o° nights in prison, because she 1s a So- cialist and has a clear conscience. I didn’t sleep so well; I am an an- archist, But my experience in jail has made me more rebellious than even, and if there are Department of Justice agents present I want them to understand and report that per- secution will not shake my ideals one iota.” Molly Stelmer, Miss Goldman re- ported, is on the fourth day of an Ellis Island hunger strike The famous anarchist also had a mesage from Kate Richards O'Hare. “Warn the world,” Kate said as Emma bade her good-by in prison, “to keep its blood-stained hands off Russia.” Louis XVI. Deportation proceedings against Emma Goldman under the Antl- Anarchy Law, held yesterday at Ellis Island, were marked by the refusal of the defendant to answer many questions put to her. This was stated by @ friend of Miss Goldman. Re- porters were not admitted to the hearing and immigration officials sald nothing could ‘be given out, as the final decision.rests with Secretary of Labor Wilson. The friend said that the chief evi- dence against Miss Goldman consist- ed of the record of the trial at which she was convicted of violation of the Espionage Act, and of addresses she had made before that time. Miss Goldman's defense against the attempt to deport her is that she became an American citizen not only through her father’s naturalization, but also through her marriage to a Jacob Kersner, whom she has not seen in more than twenty years. Harry Weinberger is her attorney.
