Nathan Hirsch, Chairman of the Mayor's Committee on Rent Profit- eering, at the suggestion of The Dve- ning World, asked Police Commis- sioner Enright to-day to have police- men report cases of rent profiteering to the committee. The letter follows: “This committee understands that you are making a survey of the list of housing vacancies In the City of New York for us. “It has been suggested by The New York Evening World—and we think the suggestion a very good one—that while you are making this survey that you also have your officers include in their reports any flagrant cases of rent profiteering that they may find.” Chairman Hirsch believes that the | reports he has asked Commissioner | Enright to supply the eomimttee, in addition to relieving the distress of the victims of profiteers, will bring into the open many landlords who are willing enough to gouge thelr tenants but fight to prevent increased assessments. Sufficient evidence al- ready had been found, it is sald, that landlords still want their old tax assessments to stand, despite the fact that they have raised their rents, This has resulted in numerous re- ports to the Tax Department by Com- missioner of Accounts Hirshfield, which the Commissioner hopes will result {n increased assessments. An effort was made to ascertain from the Commissioner approximately what increases have teen recommended in his reports so far, but he would not venture an opinion, ‘The increased taxes, If levied before fall, will be- come payable next May. If Commissioner Enright grants Mr. Hirsch's request the Mayor's Committee will have the strongest weapon it has been able to acquire, and the financial revenue of the city, It is believed, will be greatly in- creased. At present the committee depends entirely on voluntary re- ports and in many cases tenants are not inclined to complain Chief Municipal Levy, who accidentally happened into the enth District Court to-day, where fifty or more Harlesh tenants’ Justice Aaron J, duc to rent boosting, aiting trial, at once opened court and announced ‘that he would sit in all eviction ex Jacob R, Schiff, No, 320 Broadway, who appeared for many of the land- lords, began his argument by saying: “The law Your Honor, with the were is always, landlord, aw or no said Justice Levy, me some judges gained the courage to do justice, I hope I have enough character to work for justice rather than to uphold the letter of a law which has failed to serve justice as it was intended to serve, The law in these cases has failed to serve jus- lice and must justice must have pre- aw, cedence over it.
