YELLOW TAXICAB HEAD HEARS PLAIN TALK FROM, LICENSE COMMISSIONER Told He Won't Be Allowed High Rates for Fancy Salaries , and Unearned Dividends. | President Barnard of the Yellow Taxicab Company pleaded with Li- cense Commissioner George H. Bell and Alderman William D. Brush to- day to raise the present legal rate for taxicab hire. He sald the Yellow Company would go out of business if it had to accept the present rate, “The present rate is confiscatory,” | declared the head of the Yellows, “It would appear to us that the methods of running the business are self-confiscatory, if your statement of not being able to keep up under pres. | ent conditions are true,” replied Com- missioner Bell. “But we are under much greater ex- penses than the independents,” plead- 4 Mr. Barnard. “The people of the City of New York fare not interested in the overhead charges of the Yellow or any other taxicab company,” said Commissioner Bell. “If you pay $10,000 and other salaries you cannot expect to be able to compete with humbler concerns which obey the law and are making a! 8 fair profit out of their businesses, “Tho taxi rate established by this city is a fair rate for each taxicab.
