BDAY, JULY + WIFE’S DIARY BARES SECRETS ~ OF ALL DR. CARMAN’S PATIENTS ~ ———_—_-++- Husband, After First Refusing, Agrees to Permit Autopsy on Victim of Freeport Murder—Prosecutor to Probe Woman’s Alibi. 18 PAGES Wife Who Installed Dictograph; Doctor She Sought to Trap _ al Dictograph, Secretly Installed in Physician’s Office by Jealous Wife, Permitted Her to Heaf Conversations With All Callers. Mrs, Edwin Carman, the wife of the Freeport, L. 1., physician fn whose office Mrs. Louise Bailey was killed by a bullet fired through a window Tuesday evening, stood beside the body of the victim of the tragedy in Cornell's Morgue in Hempstead, L. 1, this afternoon declared she had never seen the dead woman in life. This =29 development in the mystery of the Freeport murder was brought about \ by George M. Levy, counsel for Mrs. Carman. Mr. Levy conceived the idea that, in view of the stories c1 that Mrs. Bailey was known to Dr. Carman and his wife, there | be a convincing denial. He secured the consent of the Coroner, the District Attorney and William F. Bailey, the husband of the murdered | woman, and took Mrs. Carman and her sister, Mrs. Powell, to Hemp- | stead in a limousine car. They arrived in Hempstead at 3.10 o'clock and went into the office of the undertaking establishment of C. E. Cornell at No. 268 Fulton street. The body of Mrs. Bailey was at that jtime in the home of her husband in William street. At 3.35 o'clock the body was removed from the Bailey home fo the morgue and the wicker casket was opened. Mrs. Carman, accom. panied by her lawyer, walked into the room where the body of the mur- dered woman was on view. The doctor's wife wore a blue polo coat, | white skirt and shoes and a heavy veil which partially concealed her \features. She manifested little emotion. Leaning over the casket, she scanned the face of the dead woman. Her eyes were dry, but her voice trembled as she said: “Poor woman I'm awfully sorry.” “Did you ever see this woman before?” asked Lawyer Levy. “I never saw her in my life,” replied Mrs. Carman. Mr. Levy hurried Mrs, Carman to the waiting automobile and she was soon back in her home at Freeport. During her absence the house had been thoroughly searched by four county detectives, ———ouurmsmn Following the vieit of Mra, Carman, | e | “EDWIN CARMA Prone Un conowage eReN re @n autopsy was performed on the body of Mre.
