Didu r Scores Moussorgsky’s Russian Opera, Sung in Italian, Wins Favor Crowded First Night Audience—-Principal Charm of the Work Lies in the Beautiful Choruses, Admirably Sung, Thanks to Mr. Setti. BY SYLVESTER RAWLING. ORIS GODUNO i B sian opera based 66 kia, was presented for the first time in America at the Metropolitan Op era House last night. It was sung in Italian. There was a crowded audi- ence to hear it, which showed every outward sign of enjoying it in the highest degree. But Amer. fean first night audiences are pro- Verblally generous. It does not fol- low that, because of last night's ac- clamation, the opera will prove so much of a success that it will remain Permanently in the repertory. A clever woman remarked to me, “How many of these people, applauding so rapturously, will come to hear the work again?” That will be tho test. For my own part I must record that it {8 a work of striking originality with an “appeal that is profoundly moving. The wonder is that it has not been disclosed to us before. STORY TOLD IN EPISODIC THREE ACTS OF EIGHT SCENES. Except for furnishing effective pictures, even this has little to oe with the psycholozy of Boris. Ths @n4 comes when Boris, told of the up- vising of Dimitri, dies of apoplexy or @omething like it while conscience etricken.
